John Garrett enters his fourth year with the Old Westbury Athletic Department as the Coordinator of Athletic Operations.
John Garrett coached for two season's as the Assistant Men's Basketball coach. In 2005, he helped guide the Panthers to a 12-15 overall record and a 9-6 Skyline mark. Garrett's duties as Assistant Coach included guard development and overall defensive strategies. An advocate of an aggressive defensive style, Garrett's influence could be seen in the 2004-05 season, as the Panthers led the Skyline Conference in forced turnovers. Off the court, Garrett was responsible for film exchange, scouting, and assisted in all other aspects of the day-to-day operation of the Men's Basketball program.
In addition to Men's Basketball, Garrett coached Men's and Women's Cross-Country for three years. In his first season at the helm of the Panthers, Garrett led the men's squad to a sixth place finish at the Skyline Cross Country Championship, the best finish in school history. In 2005, he guided the Panther women's team to its best finish ever, fourth place in the competitive Skyline Conference Championship. That year the men repeated with a sixth place finish. Each season, Garrett's runners have improved their times and have begun to challenge for top places within the conference.
An educator as well as a coach, several of Garrett's student-athletes have been named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll, which honors those athletes who excel in the classroom as well as on the playing field.
Prior to Old Westbury, Garrett spent three years at Oakwood
Friends School in Poughkeepsie, NY coaching volleyball, boys
soccer, boys basketball and baseball. In his final season
with the Lions, Garrett served as the Head Coach of the Girls
Volleyball, Boys Basketball and Baseball teams, leading all three
teams to the league championship game. A native of
Queens, NY, Garrett earned a Bachelor's Degree in History at Marist
College. In August 2006 he received a Master's Degree in
Sports Management from Adelphi University.
