HOPEFUL HOOPSTERS OPEN SATURDAY
(Old Westbury, NY) undated --- New seasons begin Saturday November 22nd for both College at Old Westbury basketball teams. The Panther men will open 2003-04 at the Clark Athletic Center against SUNY Purchase at 400 PM, while the women travel to Plattsburgh and a match up with Plymouth State (NH) at 600 PM, the opener of a four team tip off tournament. Sunday?s game will be against either Regis College or host SUNY Plattsburgh, start time to be announced. The Lady Panthers will open their home season against Lehman College on Tuesday, November 25 fat 700 PM.
Men?s Hoops Preview: College at Old Westbury men?s basketball finished 2002-03 winning twelve of sixteen regular season games, hosting a Skyline Conference tournament game and earning a berth in the ECAC post season tournament in the process. However, head coach Bernard Tomlin believes his Panthers can and will improve. ?I expect our general level of play to step up another notch.? The Skyline Conference Coach of the Year said his outlook was shaped by the quality of his returning veterans and success in attracting top notch athletes to Old Westbury. Among newcomers, Tomlin says first year students Isaiah Kelly and Carl Gervais from Rice HS (Bronx), and All Long Island standout Roman Pettaway (Hempstead) are notable. The team?s average height will also get a boost with the addition of 6?7? Dan Kane (Oyster Bay). He will join team MVP Chris Roberts (New York), Lovell Cannon III (Flora Park), Abraham Bakongo (Elmont) and John Termini (Melville) among veterans.
Women?s Hoops Preview: Head coach Mike Krasnoff hopes his latest recruits to contribute early and often to the success of the Lady Panthers. Newcomers include first year students Ashley Embry (Hempstead), Chanel Benjamin (Bronx) as well as transfer Akeisha Cumberbatch (Monroe). Junior Julliette George could also play an important role. 2003 Skyline All Star Christina Squillante (Levittown) and tenacious Mimi Henderson (Brooklyn) are among returning Lady Panthers, who finished with nine wins and seventeen losses.
REMINDER: There is an admission charged for men?s and women basketball at the Clark Athletic Center, General Admission is $3, SUNY Old Westbury Students w/ I.D. can attend for only $2. When there is a men?s/women?s ?doubleheader,? one admission covers both games.
