BOXSCORE - Game Two

FAYETTEVILLE, NC (www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury softball team has some defensive woes as they allowed 11 runs on 18 hits enroute to a double header loss to the North Carolina Wesleyan Bishops on Sunday afternoon at Edge Field.  Old Westbury concluded opening weekend at 0-4 while NC Wesleyan improved to 4-0.

Old Westbury got on the scoreboard first as Serina Booth set the table with a leadoff single in the first. Jessica Spero then reached on an error to move Booth over to third and stole second. Two batters later, Nicole Mannino lifted sacrifice fly to left field to score Booth.

Old Westbury starter Deborah Ciccarelli cruised through the first five innings, allowing just four hits. However, the Bishops out together a six run sixth inning, clubbing six hits to jump ahead, 6-1.  Old Westbury tacked on one run in the top of the seventh as Lauren Issac stroked a one-out double and scored during the next at-bat when Deborah Ciccarelli pounded a double to left to drive in Issac.

In game two, Old Westbury had a chance to do some damage in the first by loading the bases but left three on as NC Wesleyan starter Kacie Brandes got out of the jam. The pitcher change for Old Westbury in game two showed to be successful as Alyssa Clancy stepped into the circle, allowing one earned run in five innings of work. NC Wesleyan jumped out on top early going up 2-0 in the first due in part to a trio of errors.

Jessica Poindexter opened it up for the Bishops in the third inning with a single to left to score Kate Braun. NC Wesleyan struck again in the fifth as Brittany Nicholas singled to right center to send Braun in for her second score of the game. Three batters later Samantha Siegler allowed a passed ball and Nicholas scored the final run to end the inning up 5-0.

Kacie Brandes handed out four free passes and retired 23 of 27 Panthers to no-hit Old Westbury. Alyssa Clancy took the loss by giving up eight hits and walking two and was charged with one unearned run (five runs). The southpaw freshman registered six strikeouts.

Old Westbury returns to the field on Saturday afternoon as the Panthers and the Brooklyn Bulldogs play two in a non-conference battle at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex-Softball Field. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. in Old Westbury, New York. For the latest news on the Panthers, log on to www.oldwestburypanthers.com – the official site for Old Westbury athletics.
