ENDICOTT, NY (
www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury’s Bernard Tomlin, who has led the Panthers for the past nine years, and Brooklyn’s Steve Podias, who completed his 16th season at the helm of the Bulldog program, share this year’s New Balance Basketball Coaches Association of New York, Men’s College Division Downstate Co-Coach of the Year honor, an accolade that both accept for the first time.
Hakiem George was cited on the Second Team All-Metro BCANY Division III team.
Tomlin and Podias will receive the award at the 29th Annual BCANY Fall Clinic in Albany, New York on September 24-25, 2010.
In 2009-10, Tomlin set a career-mark with 21 wins, bypassing his previous high of 20 wins in his first season as a head coach during the 1986-87 season at William Paterson. Tomlin also advanced to the Skyline Conference Championship game for the second time over the past four seasons in addition to making his second ECAC Tourney appearance in four years.
George wrapped up his two year career as a Panther this past season. George was selected to the All-Skyline Conference Second Team for the second time and concluded his career averaging 14.2 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.7 steals. He played in 56 games for Old Westbury, totaling 796 points, 135 three pointers made, 291 rebounds and 99 steals.
The Basketball Coaches Association of New York, Inc. exists to promote the sport of basketball statewide at all levels. Further it seeks to improve the quality of coaching, foster friendship and statewide interaction among basketball coaches. The BCANY Board of Directors consists of Boys & Girls high school coaches from each NYSPHSAA (New York State Public High School Athletic Association) section, NYC Public, Private and Catholic schools. Also, Men’s and Women’s coaches at the Division I, II-III and Junior College levels. In addition it is planned to have a Boys Coach representative and Girls Coach representative from every scholastic league in the state.
