www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury baseball team was heavily recognized in the 2010 Skyline Conference awards in a vote of the leagues coaches as announced Monday.
Josef Schaetzle and
Marvin Rosario were named Player and Pitcher of the Year, respectively, Albert Bevacqua and Melvin Simmons
earned All-Conference First Team honors while Giovanni Jimenez and Jason Kondra# claimed Second-Team laurels.
Marvin Rosario, a junior left-hander from Lynbrook, New York, compiled a record of 6-2 to go along with a 3.93 ERA and 44 strikeouts. He logged 50.1 innings on the mound including two complete games and a shutout. The southpaw earned Skyline Conference Pitcher of the Week on March 8 and April 19. Rosario followed Robert Whitenack to become the third Panther in as many seasons to be named Skyline Conference Pitcher of the Year.
Josef Schaetzle, is a junior designated hitter/first baseman from Bellmore, New York. He is having a banner season, leading the league in team in a handful of offensive categories. He leads the team in batting average (.415), hits (59), RBI (37), total bases (79) and slugging percentage (.556). He was second in doubles (13) and on-base percentage (.449) and ranked fifth in runs scored (31) and produced two triples and a home run. The lefty was also named the Skyline Conference Player of the Week in back-to-back weeks on March 29 and April 5.
Senior
Albert Bevacqua was named the All-Skyline First Team second baseman after grabbing Second-Team a season ago at short stop. The Staten Island, New York native paced Old Westbury with 15 doubles and 149 at-bats this season and was second in stolen bases (13), third in batting with a .370 average, second in hits (54), third in runs scored (34) and RBI (34). Bevacqua has been amongst the nation’s leaders at the plate and is currently 18th in the nation in toughest to strikeout, fanning seven times in 146 at-bats. He is also slugging away at a .507 rate.
Junior
Melvin Simmons was named to the All-Skyline Conference First Team at short stop. Simmons, a Bronx, New York native, is first on the team in runs scored (42), third in hits (53), fourth in RBI (24), fifth on the team in hitting (.356) and clubbed three triples to tie #Giovanni Jimenez and Jason Kondra# for the lead. Simmons also recorded 10 stolen bases and led OW with 21 walks.
Junior
Giovanni Jimenez has been named as one of the All-Skyline Conference Second Team outfielders. The lefty swinging outfielder hit three homers to lead the squad. He is second on the team in runs scored (35), RBI (36) and slugging percentage (.521), third in doubles (8) and total bases (73) and fourth in hits (50). Jimenez was cited on the Skyline Conference Weekly Honor Roll one time.
Junior
Jason Kondra rounds out the All-Skyline Second Team. The outfielder was tops on the team in on-base percentage (.462) and stolen bases (17) and was second in hitting with a .386 batting average. He also recorded 32 runs scored (4th), 44 hits (5th), 56 total bases (5th), .491 slugging percentage (5th) and 19 RBI (6th). He was also tied for third on the team in stolen bases with 10.

The Panthers return to action on Thursday, May 6 for a non-conference affair with the Stevens Ducks in Old Westbury, New York at 6 p.m. for the annual Senior Day game. Seniors Tom Benedetto, Albert Bevacqua, William Campbell, Dan Fordyce, Bobby Hugli, Joe Manzella and Robert Moschetto will be honored at 5:45 p.m. for their dedication to Old Westbury Baseball during the “Senior Ceremony” at home plate.
