OLD WESTBURY, NY (
www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – Fifth-seeded SUNY College at Old Westbury advanced to the second round of the Skyline Conference Baseball Championship with a 10-7 victory over No. 4 seed Mount Saint Mary Knights Wednesday afternoon at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex. With the win, the fifth-seeded Panthers improve to 20-17 on the season and will face the St. Joseph's-L.I. Golden Eagles Friday at 3:30 p.m. in Farmingdale, New York. Mount Saint Mary is now 17-15 after being eliminated.
Mount Saint Mary took a brief two-run lead in the fourth inning on a double to left field by Louis Peisel that scored John Conroy and Max Teece. Old Westbury answered in the fifth with run scoring singles by
Steven Henriquez and
Joseph Guido along with a double by
Blake Barbeito that knocked in Ali Ferreriras. Mount Saint Mary countered in the bottom of the fifth with five runs to go ahead 7-3. Teece drove in two Knights on a single to knock OW starter
Chris Sanabria out of the game. Paul Cherubino's doubled to right center scored three runs off reliever
Steven Chapter. In the sixth,
Chris DeGennaro doubled home
Anthony Orsano while
Melvin Simmons and
Josef Schaetzle both stroked run scoring singles in the seventh.
Blake Barbeito tied the game at 7-7 in the eighth with a run scoring double. Two batters later,
Melvin Simmons gave the Panthers the lead for good with a double that scored
Kevin Cohen. Old Westbury added two insurance runs in the ninth and got Mount Saint Mary to close out the game on a 6-4-3 double play.
Marvin Rosario gave up just one hit in 3.1 innings of relief to improve to 3-1 on the season. Rosario struck out three batters on the day. Marc Soevyn took the loss for Mount Saint Mary, dropping his record to 2-1.
Chris DeGennaro (3-5, RBI, R) and
Blake Barbeito (3-5, 2 RBI) paced Old Westbury with three hits apiece.
Joseph Guido,
Melvin Simmons,
Josef Schaetzle and
Steven Henriquez all registered multiple hits. Old Westbury's 23 game stolen base streak came to an end as the Panthers were thrown out three times. John Conroy, Max Teece and Paul Cherubino banged out two hits each to lead Mount Saint Mary.
