www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – Fifth-seeded SUNY College at Old Westbury Panthers baseball team roared past the top-seeded St. Joseph's-L.I. Golden Eagles 12-3 in the second round of the Skyline Conference Championship Tournament Friday afternoon in Farmingdale, New York. Old Westbury will now play the winner of No. 2 Farmingdale State / #3 Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Farmingdale State, while SJC-L.I. takes on the loser at 1 p.m. Old Westbury has a four-game win streak against the Golden Eagles, dating back to the 2010 Skyline Conference Championship Tournament.
St. Joseph's-L.I. broke the scoring ice early as Chris Wright singled in Charles Zilnicki for the games initial run followed by a sacrifice fly by Rich Pecoparo to score Prateek Thaman for a two run lead at the end of the first. Old Westbury starter
Corey Murphy settled down after a shaky first inning, he surrendered just three hits over his next six innings. The Panther offense erupted for five runs on six hits in the fourth inning to give Murphy a 5-2 advantage.
Benjamin Farias platted home
Josef Schaetzle on a single up the middle for OW's first run. Two batters later,
Steven Henriquez delivered the go ahead two-run single, scoring
Chris DeGennaro and Farias.
Joseph Guido's single knocked in Henriquez two batters later.
Melvin Simmons lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Blake Babeito for OW's 5-2 lead. Old Westbury scoring four more runs on five hits in the sixth and tacked on another in the seventh and two more in the eighth to secure the victory. In the sixth inning, Guido hit a run-scoring single that drove in Henriquez to put OW ahead 6-2.
Old Westbury made program history during the four run sixth when Barbeito and Guido executed a double steal, swiping second and third base to break the single season stolen base record. The record was originally set in 1994 with 184 stolen bases as Barbeito and Guido's stolen bases gave OW 185 on the season. The Panthers finished the game with six stolen bases.
Corey Murphy picked up the OW victory, improving to 3-5 on the season after logging eight innings on the mound. Murphy struck out three while giving up three runs on nine hits and a walk.
Jorge Hiraldo tossed scoreless ninth for the Panthers. Joe Benkert was tapped for nine runs on 14 hits in 5.1 innings as he took the loss for SJC.
Seven Panthers registered multiple hits in the game led by #Joseph Guido and
Steven Henriquez, who both went for three hits. Henriquez and
Anthony Orsano drove in three runs while Henriquez, Guido and
Blake Barbeito scored twice. Charles Zilnicki, Chris Wright and Bryan Benisvy collected two hits apiece on the day for SJC.
