PANTHER BASEBALL ELIMINATES MSV, ADVANCES TO SKYLINE CHAMPIONSHIP SUNDAY AGAINST FARMINGDALE STATE

(www.oldwestburypanthers.com) - No. 5 SUNY College at Old Westbury Panthers baseball team advanced to its second consecutive Skyline Conference Championship appearance after eliminating No. 3 Mount Saint Vincent 8-3 Saturday afternoon in Farmingdale, New York. The Panthers will face Farmingdale State at 11 a.m. on Sunday in Farmingdale, New York, with a conference championship and an automatic berth to a NCAA Championship on the line. Old Westbury will need to defeat Farmingdale State twice on Sunday, with game two (if necessary) slated for 2 p.m.

Mount Saint Vincent jumped out to a brief one run lead with a double by James Labartino in the first inning that scored Josh Sharpe. Old Westbury replied with two runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead for good. Joseph Guido led off with a single, stole second and was driven home by a double off the bat of Melvin Simmons. Two batters later, Josef Schaetzle lined a single through the right side to score Simmons from second. Anthony Orsano tripled to lead off the sixth and Schaetzle followed with an RBI single through the right side to give OW a 3-1 lead. Old Westbury tacked on four runs in the seventh and another in the eighth to secure the victory. In the seventh, Orsano drew a bases loaded walk that allowed Blake Barbeito to score. Schaetzle lifted a sacrifice fly out to center field that scored Guido. Two batters later, Benjamin Farias reached on an error and Simmons scored followed by a bases loaded walk to Ali Ferreiras, scoring Orsano. Old Westbury's eighth run was scored when Barbeito advanced on the throw as Simmons stole second. Mount Saint Vincent scored twice in the ninth on run scoring singles by Vinny Todino and Josh Sharpe.

Old Westbury freshman starter Tyler Levine bulldogged through 8.2 innings to pick up the semifinal victory over MSV. He fanned two batters and gave up three runs on nine hits and two walks. Marvin Rosario shut the door on the Dolphins, recording the final out. Mike Trainor suffered MSV's loss after lasting 6.1 innings. Trainor was tapped for five runs on nine hits and two walks.

Old Westbury's 1-4 hitters combined to go 9-for-15 with six runs scored and five RBI. Leadoff hitter Joseph Guido set the tone with a 3-for-4 game at the plate with two runs scored. Josef Schaetzle went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Melvin Simmons and Anthony Orsano both went 2-for-4with two runs scored and an RBI. Blake Barbeito added two hits in three at-bats to go along with two runs scored. James Labartino and Vinny Todino paced the Dolphins with thee and two hits, respectively.
