www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's basketball team led the Cornell Big Red at half time 47-46, but were outscored 57-37 in the second half en route to falling 103-84 Saturday afternoon from Newman Arena. The loss snapped Old Westbury's six game win streak, moving to 10-3 on the season while Cornell improved to 8-9.
Old Westbury kept pace with Cornell in the first half, leading on five different occasions.
Tyrik Tucker scored the game's first points on a three pointer that put Old Westbury up just 31 seconds into the game. Moments later, Devin Cherry gave Cornell their first lead with a three ball followed by a Johnathan Gray layup to cap a 7-0 run for a 7-3 Big Red advantage. Both teams combined for 10 lead changes and seven ties in a high scoring first half. Gray drained one of his five first half three pointers for a 17-10 lead with 14:05 left in the half. Old Westbury answered with a 24-10 run from 13:45 to 7:44 to take a 34-27 lead as Old Westbury hit on 10-of-11 shots over that stretch. After three more ties and a lead change,
Omari Trebuse netted a three pointer with three seconds remaining to send Old Westbury into the half with a 47-46 lead.
Kerel Mitchell led Old Westbury with 15 first half points (6-8 FG) and Jonathan Gray scored 19 (7-11 FG) for Cornell. Old Westbury shot 57.6 percent from the field (19-33), including 60 percent from three point territory (9-15). Cornell hit 53.3 percent from the floor (16-30) and 57.1 percent from beyond the arc (8-14).
Old Westbury hit four of their first five shots to take a 57-50 lead out of the second half gates. Cornell answered with a 12-2 run from 17:07 to 12:19 to take a 62-59 lead.
Tyrik Tucker sank a pair of free throws to put Old Westbury back up 63-62 with 12:10 showing on the clock. From there, it was all Cornell as the Big Red used a 22-1 run from 11:47 to 7:04 to grab a commanding 84-64 advantage. Ned Tomic's layup with 15 seconds left gave Cornell a 103-81 advantage, their largest lead of the game.
Kerel Mitchell poured in 22 points to rack up his eighth 20+ point scoring performance of the year, hitting on 9-of-16 from the field to go along with three steals.
Tyrik Tucker followed with 15 points and three steals while
Omari Trebuse tied a career high with 14 points on 4-of-6 shooting from three point range, in addition to dishing out a game high six assists.
Rashawn McCarthy and
Darnell Chavis both added 10 points while
Joshua Bailey recorded two blocks.
Jonathan Gray scored a game high 24 points and grabbed seven rebounds to pace Cornell to victory. Errick Peck (16 points, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks), Nolan Cressler (15 points, 2 steals), Devin Cherry (14 points, 5 assists) and Galal Cancer (10 points, 5 assists, 2 steals) scored in double digits. Eitan Chemerinski and Shonn Miller both pulled seven rebounds.
Old Westbury finished the game shooting 50 percent from the field (31-62), 50 percent from three point territory (13-26) and 81.8 percent from the free throw line (9-11). Cornell shot 71.4 percent in the second half and finished the game hitting on 63.1 percent from the floor (41-65), 59.1 percent from beyond the arc (13-22) and 61.5 percent from the charity stripe (8-13). Cornell won the boards battle, 40-21, including an 11-3 advantage off the offensive glass, resulting in 20 second chance points. Old Westbury's 21 rebounds were the lowest total since registering 18 against Yeshiva on Feb. 2, 2012. Cornell also outscored Old Westbury 50-29 in the paint while the Panthers scored 32 points off 21 Big Red turnovers.
