@OW_Panthers Baseball Gives Back at Special Olympics Long Island Fall Classic

32 members of Old Westbury’s baseball program volunteered at the Special Olympics Long Island Fall Classic on September 27 at Cantiague Park


HICKSVILLE, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury baseball program assisted with running the softball portion of the Special Olympics Long Island Fall Classic on September 27 from Cantiague Park in Hicksville, New York. 

For the fourth straight year, head coach Rod Stephan held the position of softball tournament director, while assistant coach Lou Bernardi, took on his new role as assistant softball tournament director.   Old Westbury's student-athletes enjoyed positive interaction with Special Olympics New York's dedicated and enthusiastic throng of athletes, coaches, volunteers and fans. 

The student-athletes were responsible for helping run the event, set up and break down, keep score during competition, stage athletes and help with the opening and closing ceremonies.

Stephan and Bernardi, along with Old Westbury baseball players Vinny Bieniek, Jonathan Cameron, Michael Cardino, Joseph Chiaramonte, Jacob Coners, Robert Crocitto, Matthew Domina, James DeSantis, Nick Dorcean, Peter Falgiano, Christian Faust, Mike Gismondi, JT Haas, Robinson Hernandez, Tyler Kapela, Christian Lozano, Jesse Matos, Justin Mize, Jonathan Pagan, Chris Ptak, Tyler Roberts, Dean Scheridan, Matthew Taurisani, Joey Walsh, Thomas Whitenack, Jomar Wilson, Nick Yip and Tommy Ziegen, in addition to assistant coaches Mike Atan and Alex Nikolic participated in the event.    

Athletes from Long Island, New York City and Hudson Valley participated in the 2014 Fall Classic competed in bocce, cross country, golf, soccer and softball competitions.
