OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's soccer team hosted a Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Match on October 18 in a Skyline Conference showdown against the Maritime Privateers from Panther Park.  Earlier in the day, both teams, along with fans, joined together to take a walk around the grounds of Panther Park to promote awareness for MS.

Margaret Bey, who battles the MS disease, the mother of Old Westbury's starting sophomore defender Sara Bey, joined Old Westbury and Maritime at midfield for the starting lineups and singing of the national anthem by starting senior midfielder Kassandra  Franco.  Funds were donated to the National MS Society from a 50/50 raffle that took place during the match.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) involves an immune-mediated process in which an abnormal response of the body's immune system is directed against the central nervous system (CNS), which is made up of the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. The exact antigen — or target that the immune cells are sensitized to attack — remains unknown, which is why MS is considered by many experts to be "immune-mediated" rather than "autoimmune."

Multiple sclerosis and the MS movement – everyone engaged in addressing the challenges of MS today while moving toward long-term solutions for tomorrow – become better known each year. But more must be done.

Every connection counts when it comes to increasing awareness and support of our cause. Every individual we connect with personally, every letter we write to an elected official, every person in our Facebook network, every poster we put up, every dollar we raise, every video viewed – each connection has the opportunity to change the world for people affected by MS.
