AUBURN, NY---(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) No. 7 SUNY Old Westbury (26-12) suffered a 12-2 loss to the No. 6 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Engineers (28-15), Thursday evening in day two action of the NCAA Division III Baseball New York Regional double-elimination Tournament from Falcon Park in Auburn, New York.  The Panthers now move into Friday's win-or-go-home matchup with No. 8 Oberlin Yeomen (19-27) at 1:15 p.m.

RPI broke the scoring ice in the second inning with an unearned run off Panther starting right-hander Tyler Kapela (2-2, 4.1 IP, 8 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 3 BB, 4 K).  Nick Palmiero (3-for-4, 2 RBI, 2 R, BB, SB) led off the frame with a double, and advanced to third off Thomas Desmond's ground out.  Two batters later, Palmiero scored off a fielding error by third baseman Matthew Taurisani.

Jacob Coners (2-for-4, R, 2 SB), who led off Old Westbury's first with a single, reached base on a muffed throw by first baseman Jason Ramos in the third.  Coners then stole second and moved to third off Taurisani's ground out before working a double steal with Nick Yip to score the Panthers' initial run off starting right-hander Greg Echeverria (7-3, 9 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K).

The Engineers jumped back in front in the fourth with Jason Ramos' (2-for-5, 2 RBI, 2 R) two-out RBI single that scored Tim LeSuer (3-for-5, 2 RBI, BB) for the 2-1 lead.  LeSuer opened the inning with a double to collect his second hit of the game.  Two batters later, Michael Croke collected RPI's fourth hit of the inning by driving home Ramos with a run-scoring single.

Jonathan Pagan (0-for-4, R, 2 SB) sparked the Panthers in the fourth by reaching base on a fielder's choice.  He then stole second and advanced to third on Tommy Ziegen's ground out before stealing home during Brandon Stein's at bat to make it a 3-2 game.

Kapela was unable to escape out of the fifth inning after surrendering two runs on three walks and two singles before righty reliever Nick Dorcean took over with the bases loaded.  Kapela was charged with three more runs as Dorcen allowed a bases loaded walk and a two-run double in the frame for RPI's six-run cushion.

RPI tacked on one run in the seventh off right-handed reliever Justin Mize, scoring Matt Lawrence (2-for-4, RBI, R, BB) off Jared Jensen's (3-for-5, 2 RBI, 2 R, SB) sacrifice fly out to center field for a 9-2 lead.

Mize plunked Croke with a pitch in the ninth, who then scored two batters later off Tyler Listing's RBI single.  Following a dropped foul ball by Taurisani, Jensen singled home Listing to give the Engineers an 11-2 advantage.  Palmiero added a RBI single to score Jensen to close out the scoring books.
