LONG BEACH, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's volleyball spent April 28 cleaning the shores of Long Beach organized by the New York State Beach Cleanup program.

Members of Old Westbury's women's volleyball program walked a mile stretch of the beach with garbage bags to collect debris and pollutants.  The beach cleanup prevented further harm to the waters and shore that threatens marine wildlife and insults our aesthetic eye.

"This was a rewarding experience that allowed us to contribute to an important cause," said SUNY Old Westbury head women's volleyball coach Rich Borawski.  "Why wait for something to get done when you can do something about it."

Borawski and Old Westbury women's volleyball student-athletes Brittany Buchanan, Alicia Gewirtz, Sofia Goris, Chelsey Hoffman, Gerlande Lucas, Shanayia Lloyd and Olivia O'Keefe participated in the event.

"Since we hold preseason practices on the beaches of Long Beach, we feel it is also our responsibility to do our part to keep the beaches clean of all types of debris so everyone can enjoy one of Earth's precious commodities," said Borawski.

Of the 7,723 volunteers coordinated by the American Littoral Society in 2015, 125,544 pounds of debris were cleaned and documented along 250.21 miles of New York State's shoreline.

Since 1986, the Northeast Chapter of the American Littoral Society has coordinated New York's participation in the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC).  This effort has the overarching sponsorship of the Ocean Conservancy in Washington, DC.  The cleanup is a worldwide event in which over 100 countries and almost all of our states participate.

"A special thank you to Chief of Long Beach Lifeguard Patrol Paul Gillespie for joining us in our cause," added Borawski.
