PANTHER BASEBALL TRIO NAMED ALL REGION

by Matt Farrand, SUNY Old Westbury Sports Information Director

(Brockport, NY) Wednesday, May 26, 2004 --- Old Westbury Baseball is again well represented on the New York Region NCAA Division III ABCA/Rawlings All Star Team, as SS Angel Melendez, OF John Decrescenzo and RHP Nick Perez were today named by chairman Mark Rowland at Brockport State.

For Angel Melendez (Brooklyn, NY), his 2004 Panther season capped a great collegiate career. The senior shortstop batted .362 while stealing 32 bases in 38 attempts, and was named to the second team. Melendez was previously named a Skyline Conference All Star and majored in media and communications at Old Westbury.

Meanwhile, first year OF John Decrescenzo (Brooklyn, NY) enjoyed an outstanding collegiate debut. He led regular Panther starters, batting .390, accumulated a .486 slugging percentage, and was named team 2004 MVP at the Tenth Annual Old Westbury Athletic Awards Night. Decrescenzo is a Communications major and was named to the third team.

Hard throwing Nick Perez (Corona, NY) saved four victories for Old Westbury in 2004. The junior right hander also struck out 26 in 21.0 innings, winning three games and losing only once. His 1.29 earned run average was the lowest among the four pitchers named to the third team.
