The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, which specializes in elite amateur baseball, has highlighted two Old Westbury baseball players on its list of players to watch in the 2006 season.
Junior shortstop Darly Alcantara (Bronx, NY/William Taft HS) and junior catcher Anthony Gonzales (Brooklyn, NY/Grand Street Campus) have both been named to the list, which is comprised of the top players in NCAA Division III.
Alcantara played 37 games at shortstop in 2005 and was a perfect 15-for-15 in stolen bases. He finished the year hitting .306 with three homeruns and 28 RBI and also added 11 doubles, 26 runs scored and 60 total bases for the Panthers.
Gonzales, a transfer from Queensborough Community College, was a Third Team All-American in 2005. At Queensborough, he compiled 10 homeruns, 47 RBI and batted .420, helping his team capture the CUNY Championship and a trip to the Division III Junior College World Series.
Old Westbury's 2006 season opens on March 9 with a doubleheader at North Carolina Wesleyan. The Panthers will travel to Lynchburg College and Lincoln University before returning to New York to host Cazenovia. The Skyline Conference season begins on March 25 with a doubleheader at Farmingdale State.
