Old Westbury Baseball Tops Baruch 8-4
Mar 19, 2006

The Old Westbury baseball team won its second-straight game this afternoon, topping Baruch 8-4. With the win, the Panthers improve to 4-4 on the season.

Baruch took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, as Arby Gega's two-out single with bases loaded drove in all three runs. Old Westbury fired back in the bottom of the frame, driving in four runs for the one-run lead.

Greg Jones opened the inning with a single and went on to steal second. After Darly Alcantara walked, Jones took third on a passed ball and both he and Alcantara advanced with stolen bases, with Jones scoring the Panthers' first run. Alcantara went on to score on a passed ball and Old Westbury picked up two more runs that inning for the 4-3 lead.

Alcantara opened up the second inning with a double to centerfield and, after advancing to third on an error, gave the Panthers a 5-3 edge by scoring on the would-be game-winning single by Ramon Geronimo.

Baruch's fourth and final run came in the top of third as a result of a Panthers error. The Bearcats continued their threat in the inning, loading the bases with two outs, but Old Westbury starter Peter Reyes fanned Montana Leonard for the final out of the inning.

Matt Schramm's sacrifice fly in the fourth scored Alcantara for the Panthers' sixth run and Ricardo Pena and Jones each crossed the plate in the sixth for the 8-4 final.

Reyes struck out nine in 6.0 innings en route to the win for Old Westbury. George Pagan struck out three in 3.0 scoreless innings and earned the save. Alcantara finished with three runs for Old Westbury, including the game-winner. Geronimo went 2-for-2 with one RBI. Jonathan Perozo took the loss for the Bearcats. Alberto Nieves went 2-for-4 and Gega finished with three RBI for Baruch.

The Panthers will host John Jay College on Tuesday at New York Tech.
