Tapia and Flinn Pitch Shutouts as Old Westbury Sweeps Doubleheader with Maritime
Mar 26, 2006

The Old Westbury Panthers topped Maritime with two shutout wins this afternoon in a Skyline Conference game held at Kings Point. The Panthers improve to 6-7 overall and 2-2 in the league.

Emilio Tapia led the Panthers in game one, earning the win on the mound after striking out 10 in the seven inning complete game shutout, while Flinn, who also finished the complete game, struck out nine in 9.0 innings for the win in game two.

After a 1-2-3 top half of the first inning, the Panthers did their damage in their first opportunity at the plate. Jamie Quinn crossed the plate for the would-be game-winning run, after reaching base on an error. Ramon Geronimo's at-bat resulted in the run, as he also reached on an error. Felipe Martinez would provide an insurance run later in the inning, scoring Geronimo and a single.

Old Westbury went on to add one run in the third, as Victor Carrion's RBI single drove in Rob Knips, and another in the fifth, as Geronimo's sacrifice fly brought home Quinn.

Carrion finished game one 2-for-2 with an RBI, while Martinez and Geronimo finished with an RBI each. Larry Berger allowed eight hits and one earned run in 6.0 innings work for the Privateers. Arliss Steele and Daniel Hosemann each picked up two hits for Maritime.

Old Westbury scored the game-winning run early in the second game, as Quinn's at-bat scored Knips from third in the bottom of the second inning. The Panthers, however did most of their damage in the third, scoring seven runs to take an 8-0 lead.

After Martinez was hit by a pitch and Jones walked to start the inning, Geronimo's RBI single opened up the scoring attack. Quinn picked up another RBI two plays later and Old Westbury finished the inning with the seven runs off of four hits.

Old Westbury went on to score three runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings, one in the fifth and two in the eighth.

Quinn finished game two with three RBI to lead Old Westbury. Felipe Martinez and Darly Alcantara added two each. Matthew Cresswell picked up two hits to lead Maritime. Colin Bryant took the loss for the Privateers.

The Panthers will return to non-conference action on Monday at William Paterson.
