The College of Staten Island topped Old Westbury baseball 8-4 this afternoon in a midweek non-conference game. The Dolphins improve to 15-7 overall, while Old Westbury falls to 8-13.
Eric Waldhelm allowed four runs in 6.1 innings for Staten Island, but walked away with the win, as the Dolphins put up all eight runs before the seventh.
Old Westbury took an early 1-0 lead, as Felipe Martinez' single drove in Victor Carrion in the first inning. Carrion had reached base with a game-opening single.
Staten Island put two runs up in the third, as Ray Valerio's double scored one run and P.J. Liconti's single up the middle scored Valerio two batters later.
The Dolphins scored three more runs, including the would-be game-winner in the top of the fourth. Jamie Lee opened the inning with a double to centerfield and advanced to third on a single by Mohammad Hamad. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, giving Staten Island a 3-1 edge. Hamad would round the bases and eventually score on an error by the Panthers' catcher and Paul Buonviaggio added the game-winning RBI single for the 5-1 lead.
Old Westbury scored one run in the sixth when William Rada tripled to centerfield, scoring Martinez, who had opened the inning with a single. Staten Island extended its lead in the seventh tallying three runs off of three hits to take an 8-2 lead.
Carrion's double for Old Westbury in the bottom of the ninth scored Darly Alcantara, and, after Jamie Quinn singled, Peter Petrides grounded out to short and allowed Carrion to score. The Dolphins escaped the threat and held on for the 8-4 final.
Carrion, Martinez and Rada each finished 2-for-4 for Old Westbury. Emilio Tapia took the loss for the Panthers, but allowed just one earned run in 4.0 innings. Christen Colon struck out two batters in 2.1 innings work for Old Westbury. Buonviaggio led the Dolphins with a 3-for-4 performance.
The Panthers return to action tomorrow at Cortland.
