Panthers Edged by Nationally Ranked Cortland, 7-6

Jamie Quinn went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Felipe Martinez drove in two runs for the Old Westbury, but No. 4 Cortland pulled out a 7-6 win in a non-conference baseball game. The Panthers fall to 8-14 overall, while Cortland improves to 21-5.

Cortland took a 1-0 lead on Andrew Mead's sacrifice fly in the first and added a run in the second on a sacrifice fly by junior Mike Rosenberry. In the fourth, Vitalone doubled with two outs, Rosenberry walked and Groff doubled down the left field line to drive in both runs with his only hit of the game.

Old Westbury got two runs back in the fifth without a hit. Quinn walked and reached second after a failed pickoff attempt. Victor Carrion walked and after both runners advanced on a flyout, Peter Petrides walked to load the bases. The Panthers scored two run when Jweid attempted another pickoff and missed his target.

Vitalone's two-out single to left scored a run for Cortland in the fifth inning. In the sixth, Cortland added another run when the Panthers failed on a pickoff attempt and would score one more off of a sacrifice fly.

The Panthers got back into the game with three runs in the seventh. Jesse Germinario walked and Petrides singled. Martinez followed with a two-run double, stole third and would go on to score on Greg Jones' fielder's choice.

In the eighth for Old Westbury, Quinn led off with a bunt single and went to third on a single. Justin Mattes struck out the next batter, but threw away another pickoff throw to second, allowing Quinn to score. The Panthers could not plate the tying run.

George Jweid allowed two hits and two unearned runs over five innings to lead Cortland. Matt Vitalone went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, junior Will Grof hit a two-run double in the fourth and Jim Basnight walked in all five of his plate appearances.

Peter Reyes suffered the loss for Old Westbury, allowing two hits, four walks and two runs in three innings.

The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, April 19 against Fairleigh Dickinson.
