The Old Westbury baseball team edged out the Kings Point Mariners 10-9 in the first game of today's Skyline Conference doubleheader, before falling 5-1 in game two.
Darly Alcantara's two-run homerun in the top of the ninth proved to be the game-winner for the Panthers in game one, giving Old Westbury a 10-7 lead. Kings Point rallied in the bottom half of the inning, scoring two runs, but Felipe Martinez retired the final batter with two runners on, giving Old Westbury the 10-9 win.
Kings Point went ahead early, scoring in the bottom of the first, but Old Westbury's Rob Knips tallied an RBI single that scored Felipe Martinez to tie the game in the top half of the second. The Mariners added two runs with their next opportunity, and, after Martinez drove in another run for the Panthers in the third, Kings Point took a 5-2 lead with two more runs in the fifth.
The Panthers took their first lead of the game in the eighth, with a seven-hit rally that resulted in six runs. Victor Carrion started things off with a walk, and would go on to score on a passed ball, after advancing on a double by Knips. Ricardo Pena (1), John Decrescenzo (2), and William Rada (2) would all record RBI during the run, which saw 11 Old Westbury batters step to the plate and left the Panthers with an 8-5 lead.
Kings Point cut it to one with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, but Old Westbury sealed the win with the two runs in the top of the eighth,
Geronimo and Alcantara each picked up three hits for Old Westbury, while Decrescenzo, Rada and Alcantara finished with two RBI each. Argelis Rosario picked the win, striking out 12 in seven innings. Martinez picked up the save with two innings work.
In game two, the Mariners used a second inning run to score four runs, en route to a 5-1 win. Hoffman's RBI single scored the winning run, before Kings Point added two insurance runs in the inning.
Kings Point added one run in the third to go up 5-0. Old Westbury scored it's lone run in the seventh as Alcantara reached base on a single and would go on to score off of an RBI single by Carrion.
Emilio Tapia took the loss for Old Westbury. Carrion finished with two hits to lead the offensive effort in game two.
The Panthers return to action on Sunday when they host St. Joseph's in a double header to be played at Kings Point. First pitch is at 11:00 am.
