Panthers Top Fairleigh Dickinson 16-8, Game vs. John Jay Cancelled Due to Rain
May 3, 2006

Darly Alcantara's four RBI led the Panthers in a 16-8 win over Fairleigh Dickinson in game one of today's twilight doubleheader. Game two against John Jay, which began at 7:00, was cancelled after one half inning due to rain.

Old Westbury celebrated senior day prior to game two, highlighting the career of four-year starting pitcher Nelson Hernandez, who struck out two batters in the only inning of game two.

Trailing 1-0 in game one, Jamie Quinn singled in the third for Old Westbury, knocking in the game-tying and the go-ahead runs. John Taglienti singled on the next play to score Quinn and the Panthers put together three more runs for a 6-1 lead.

One inning later, Alcantara hit a triple and was driven in two plays later on a double by Taglienti. In the top of the fourth, FDU took advantage of three Panther defensive errors to score one run and cut Old Westbury's lead to 7-2.

Old Westbury added three runs off of three hits in the fifth for a 10-2 lead. Felipe Martinez opened the inning with a single and later came around to score. Alan Anderson added an RBI triple and Alcantara hit a double to drive Anderson home.

A five-run sixth inning, which included two singles, two walks and a three RBI triple by Alcantara saw the Panthers take a 15-2 lead.

FDU got back three runs in the eighth and the Devils threatened again in the top of the ninth, making up three more runs on five hits, but could not close the gap.

Alcantara finished 4-for-5 with four RBI and three runs scored to lead the Panthers. Taglienti finished with three hits and two RBI, while Jones and Quinn added two RBI a piece. Zach Flinn got the win on the mound, Ed Kania took the loss for FDU.

The Panthers host Purchase tomorrow at 4:00 pm in the final home contest of the season.
