Peter Reyes won his third-straight game for Old Westbury, striking out eight batters en route to a 5-2 win over Purchase this afternoon in non-league action. With the win, Old Westbury improves to 14-20 overall, while Purchase falls to 9-24.
Old Westbury took an early 1-0 lead, utilizing the top portion of its lineup in textbook fashion. Leadoff hitter John Taglienti walked to start things off and advanced to second on a balk by Purchase pitcher Rob Piervinanzi. Jesse Germinario laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Taglienti to third and Alan Anderson hit a sacrifice fly to rightfield to score the run.
Purchase tied the game up in the fourth when Charles Quaglino hit an RBI single to drive in Tony Dimitry, who started the inning off with a single.
Old Westbury took a 2-1 lead in the bottom half of the same inning, when Felipe Martinez homered over the leftfield fence. The hit, which led off the bottom of the fourth, marked the first homerun for Old Westbury at the newly renovated Jackie Robinson Sports Complex.
The Panthers added two runs in the sixth as Alan Anderson scored the would-be game-winner on an error by Purchase's pitcher, who had attempted a pickoff at third. Ricardo Pena later hit a sacrifice fly to score Martinez, who had reached on an error. Will Rada scored the Panthers' fifth and final run in the eighth.
Purchase rallied in the ninth, but could only bring home one run, as Lees' fielder's choice scored pinch hitter Aloisi, who reached base with a walk.
Kevin Reynolds finished 2-for-4 for Old Westbury. Piervinanzi took the loss for Purchase on the mound, but also led the team offensively with a 3-for-4 performance.
