Panthers Split Doubleheader with Mt. St. Vincent
Apr 25, 2006

After celebrating the Grand Opening of the Jackie Robinson Sports Complex, the Old Westbury baseball team split its Skyline Conference doubleheader with Mt. St. Vincent, winning game one 8-0 before falling 3-0 in game two.

Old Westbury President Dr. Calvin O. Butts, III threw out the ceremonial first pitch to officially open the field, the only baseball field in Nassau County equipped with lights.

Peter Reyes threw a complete game shutout en route to an 8-0 win for the Panthers in game one. The senior pitcher struck out six and allowed just three hits.

Greg Jones scored the game-winner in the third inning, advancing home on Victor Carrion's at-bat. Felipe Martinez' single in the sixth inning scored Carrion and Darly Alcantara tripled in the seventh, scoring Jones to give Old Westbury a 3-0 edge.

The Panthers put the game out of reach in the eighth inning, putting up three hits and making the most of three Dolphin errors. The rally was highlighted by an RBI double by Alcantara and Kevin Reynolds and Ricardo Pena each picked up an RBI during the run.

Pena, Rob Knips and Alcantara each went 2-for-2 to lead Old Westbury's offense, with Alcantara finishing with two RBI. O'Leary took the loss for the Dolphins, pitching 7.0 innings and allowing five hits and two earned runs.

After four quick scoreless innings in game two, the Dolphins plated the game-winning run in the top of the fifth. Nick Triolo walked to open the inning, and Mt. St. Vincent went on to draw three more walks with two outs, allowing Triolo to come around and score.

Mt. St. Vincent's final two runs came in the sixth, as the Panthers walked in another run and Eddie Park grounded out to once again score Triolo.

Joe Orgovan picked up the win for Mt. St. Vincent after giving up two hits in the shutout win. The Dolphins finished with just one hit, as Tanner Munroe picked up a single.

Jamie Quinn and John Taglienti had Old Westbury's two hits. Argelis Rosario took the loss after throwing 5.1 innings.

The Panthers will return to action on Thursday at home against Mt. St. Mary. Game one begins at 4:00 pm.
