Old Westbury Sweeps Skyline Doubleheader Against Mt. St. Mary
Apr 27, 2006

The Old Westbury Panthers improved to 11-16 overall and 6-7 in the league with back-to-back wins in tonight's twilight doubleheader win over Mt. St. Mary at the Jackie Robinson Sports Complex. Old Westbury pulled off a 2-1 win, tallying the game-winner in the bottom of the ninth in game one and shutout the Blue Knights with a 5-0 win in game two.

With one out in the bottom of the ninth inning and the game tied at one, Jesse Germinario placed a double into the left centerfield gap, driving in John Taglienti from second for the game-winning run in game one.

Mt. St. Mary scored the game's first run in the top of the fifth when, with men on second and third, Steve Cabaccas reached on a fielder's choice, driving in Anthony Forgione.

The Panthers answered in the sixth, tying the game when Darly Alcantara scored on a single by catcher Jamie Quinn. Alcantara reached with a single and advanced to second on third on infield errors by the Blue Knights.

Peter Petrides started the sixth inning rally, doubling down the left field line, and Taglienti entered the game as a pinch runner on second. Germinario, who had entered the game as a pinch hitter in the seventh, ended the game with a well-placed walk-off double.

Quinn and Geronimo finished with two hits each for Old Westbury. George Pagan earned the win in relief, after allowing one hit in two innings. Starter Nelson Hernandez allowed just one earned run in seven innings. Scott Francis took the loss for the Blue Knights, after giving up seven hits, and striking out eight in 8.1 innings work.

Emilio Tapia pitched a 7.0 inning shutout, allowing just two hits and striking out nine, en route to a 5-0 win for the Panthers in game two.

Old Westbury opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first inning of game two, as Victor Carrion walked and eventually came around to score on a throwing error. With two outs in the home half of the third, Ramon Geronimo crushed a triple to right center field, and, on the next pitch, scored on a wild pitch.

William Rada continued to build the Panthers lead, opening up the fourth inning with a double down the left field line. After an Alan Anderson walk, Rob Knips singled to rightfield to drive in a run and give Old Westbury a 3-0 lead. Old Westbury added two runs off of an RBI triple by Alcantara that scored Knips and Kevin Reynolds.

Damon Kennedy took the loss for Mt. St. Mary.
