The St. Joseph's Golden Eagles topped Old Westbury in two Skyline Conference Baseball Games this afternoon, winning game one 4-3 and game two 8-5. Old Westbury falls to 3-5 in the league (7-10), while St. Joseph's improves to 6-2 (9-10).
St. Joseph's took advantage of a Panthers' outfield error that left runners in scoring position and tallied three runs in the top of the fourth. The Golden Eagles went on to add one run in the sixth and held on to a 4-0 lead into the eighth.
Ramon Geronimo's single up the middle, kicked off a Panther rally in the bottom of the eighth. Felipe Martinez' double put Geronimo on third and Greg Jones' single on the next play drove him home. Jones stole second on the next play and, after a throwing error by St. Joseph's catcher, Martinez advanced home and Jones moved on to third.
Will Rada's sacrifice fly scored Jones, cutting the lead to 4-3, but the Golden Eagles escaped the threat, as Zach Keckley caught the final Panther batter looking.
With its last attempt, Old Westbury sent three up and three down. Migliorisi picked up the win for St. Joseph's after allowing no runs in seven innings.
Geronimo finished 3-for-5 for Old Westbury, while Jones and Martinez picked up to hit each. Nelson Hernandez took the loss.
After falling behind 1-0 off an RBI single by Alex Regruto, the Panthers answered in the bottom half of the first inning with three runs. With bases loaded, Jones drew a walk, scoring Alan Anderson, who had reached on a single. The Panthers go-ahead runs came off an RBI single by Will Rada that drove in two runs and gave Old Westbury a 3-1 lead.
St. Joseph's once again rallied, this time tallying seven runs off of five hits in the top of the second. Joe Armenio produced the go-ahead run, as John Schwenzer scored when he was hit by a pitch with bases loaded. Welsh recorded two RBI with a bases loaded single and Welsh tripled to right center for two runs for the Golden Eagles. The Panthers got two runs back in the fourth, as Jesse Germinario's single resulted in two runs, but the Golden Eagles held them off, winning 8-5.
Zach Flinn took the loss for Old Westbury, while Rob Mauro earned the win. Rada and Germinario picked up two RBI a piece for the Panthers, while Welsh and Fiske each chipped in two for St. Joseph's.
The Panthers return home on Wednesday with a non-conference game against Queens College.
