The Old Westbury Panthers baseball team split its final Skyline series of the season with Stevens Institute of Technology Sunday at Dobbelaar Baseball Field in Hoboken, N.J. With the win in game one, Stevens earns the No. 3 seed in the Skyline Conference Tournament. Old Westbury finishes its conference slate with an 8-10 record and is now 12-19 overall.
In the first game, Stevens made the most of four Panther erros, tallying seven runs. Gerard Moreno reached second on a two-base throwing error by Panthers' pitcher and back-to-back walks left the bases loaded. John Frustaci stepped up with a two RBI single and, after another walk, Ryan Birkenstock hit a ground-rule double that drove in two more runs for the Ducks.
Stevens scored another run off of an Old Westbury throwing error, Andrew Tesoriero drove in the sixth run with an RBI groundout and the Ducks final run of the inning came as a result of another Panther error.
The Ducks scored their final run in the fourth. Old Westbury scored its only run in the eighth when Peter Petrides' triple drove in Ramon Geronimo, who had reached base with a single to open the inning.
Argelis Rosario took the loss, after allowing seven hits, eight runs and four walks over eight innings. Rosario struck out eight batters in the game. John Taglienti had two hits for the Panthers. William Rada was 2-for-4
In the second game, Old Westbury made the most of a sloppy defensive effort by the Ducks in the first inning, scoring three runs on just one base hit.
Stevens closed to within 3-2 in the third on a bases-loaded single by Sandt with one out in the inning. Moreno and Gunshor scored on the play.
Old Westbury added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth inning on a two-out, two-run single by Ricardo Pena. Stevens rallied in the seventh, but, after an outstanding defensive stop by Geronimo at third, the Ducks only managed one run for the 5-4 final.
Geronimo went 2-for-4 with two runs scored for Old Westbury. Pena added two hits and two RBI. Senior pitcher Peter Reyes ( Brentwood , N.Y. ) picked up the win as he allowed seven hits, four runs and two walks in a complete-game effort.
