The Old Westbury baseball team split today's doubleheader with Manhattanville, falling 8-1 in game one, before bouncing back to win game two 4-1. The Panthers move to 8-12 overall and 4-6 in the league.
Senior Nelson Hernandez pitched 5.1 innings, striking out three, to lead the Panthers to the win in game two. Darly Alcantara went 2-for-3 with two RBI and Victor Carrion added two RBI to lead the Old Westbury offense.
After a scoreless first inning, the Panthers got on the board first in the second inning of game two. Jesse Germinario and Alcantara opened the inning with back-to-back doubles, with Germinario crossing the plate on the second. Carrion recorded the game-winning RBI on the next play as Alcantara scored from second.
The Valiants cut the lead to one in the bottom half of the inning, scoring their lone run of the game on a sacrifice fly by DelGrosso.
Alcantara's double in the fourth scored Rob Knips, who had reached on a fielder's choice, and Carrion followed with an RBI single for the 4-1 final.
George Pagan earned the save after striking out two in the final inning. Mulligan took the loss for Manhattanville after allowing four runs off six hits in 4.2 innings.
Barrar pitched the complete game for the Valiants in game one.
The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the second after Felipe Martinez scored on a ground out by William Rada. Martinez reached base with a single and went on to steal second and third before being driven in.
Manhattanville scored six runs in the fourth, with the game-winning hit coming at the hands of Verrenegia in the form of a two RBI double.
Argelis Rosario took the loss for the Panthers. Ricardo Pena went 2-for-4, while Geronimo, Martinez and Greg Jones picked up one hit a piece.
The Panthers will return to action on Wednesday against the College of Staten Island.
