PANTHERS STOP LIGHTNING FROM STRIKING, 6-3

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y.-The Old Westbury baseball team improved to 6-8 on the season with a 6-3 non-conference win over Lehman College. Peter Reyes pitched 2 scoreless innings and was credited with the win. Reyes improves to 2-1 on the season and pitcher Bill Campbell came in for relief to shut the door on Lehman with 2 innings of work to earn his first save of the season.
Old Westbury drew first blood in the first inning when Darly Alcantara led off with a single and moved over to third on a fielding error that brought Greg Jones to second base. Alcantara trotted across home plate off a William Rada sacrifice fly to center field. The Panthers added another run in the second inning when Ricardo Pena doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a fielding error that sent Matt Schramm to second base to put Old Westbury up 2-0 after 2 innings. Willie Silverio entered into the game and gave up a run in the third inning when Luis Alicia hit an RBI single that drove in Johanny Reyes from second base to cut the deficit to one run, 2-1 heading into the bottom of the third inning. Old Westbury came roaring back with 2 more runs in the third inning when Darly Alcantara scored from second base off a Greg Jones double. Jones stole third base and came around to score on a William Rada double. Lehman added another run to their total when Kareem Benjamin scored on a sacrifice fly to center off the bat of Jason Carabello. Lehman struck again in the eighth inning when Andrew Rosario singled to drive in Amin Suero from second base to bring the Lightning within 1 run, 4-3 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning. The Panthers responded to a late surge from Lehman by adding two more insurance runs in the eighth inning to go onto win in nine innings, 6-3. Kevin Reynolds scored from third base on a ground out by Felipe Martinez to put the Panthers up, 5-3. Ricardo Pena doubled to bring around William Rada from third base to give the Panthers a three run cushion.
Peter Reyes struck out 4 batters and allowed 1 hit in 2 innings of work to earn his second victory of the season. Bill Campbell pitched the eighth and ninth innings to record his first save of the year, striking out 2 batters. William Rada led the Old Westbury offensive attack with 2 RBIs and hit 2-for-3 at the plate. Darly Alcantara scored twice and went 1-for-3 at the plate. Ricardo Pena went 2-for-4 on the game with 2 doubles and scored once.
The Panthers will be back in action on Saturday, March 31st when the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy comes to the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex for a Skyline Conference double-header.
