OLD WESTBURY WINS BATTLE OF THE PANTHERS, 15-3

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y.-The Old Westbury baseball team improved to 10-9 on the season with a15-3 win over SUNY Purchase College in the battle of the Panthers at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex on Thursday.  Robert Whitenack was credited with the win, coming into relief and pitching a scoreless fifth inning, improving his record to 2-2 on the season.  Greg Jones lead the Panthers offensive, swiping 4 stolen bases and scoring 3 runs on 2 hits.

The Panthers matched Purchases' 2 run first inning when Darly Alcantara led off with a single, followed by a walk garnered by Greg Jones and a double steal to move runners to second and third base.  William Rada drove in Alcantara off a sacrifice fly to center, moving Jones to third base.  Jones scored a run off a grounder by Felipe Martinez to even the score at 2-2 at the end of the first inning.  Old Westbury posted a 5-run second inning when Matt Schramm singled and stole second base to lead off the inning.  Jonathan Nelson walked and John Taglienti doubled to bring around both Nelson and Schramm.  Jesse Germinario then doubled to move Taglienti to third base when Alcantara drove in Taglietni on a sacrifice fly to left field.  Germinario stole third base and came home off a single by Greg Jones Jones stole second base and came around to score off a single to left field by Felipe Martinez to advance the Panthers at the end of two innings to, 7-3.  In the fourth inning, Greg Jones walked and stole second and third base and then scored when William Rada singled down the left field line to increase the Panther lead to 8-3 after four innings.  Old Westbury poured on 4 more runs in the fifth inning when John Limberis reached first base on a throwing error and advanced to second base on a single by Brian Magas.  Taglienti was then hit by a pitch to load the bases for Jesse Germinario, who then doubled down the left field line to bring home Limberis and Magas putting Taglienti at third base.  Darly Alcantara singled to bring home Taglietni and Germinario, putting the Panthers of Old Westbury in control, 12-3 at the end of five innings.  Old Westbury added two more runs in the sixth inning when Felipe Martinez hit a lead off double and advanced to third base on a grounder by Kevin Reynolds.  John Limberis stepped up to the plate and delivered with a sacrifice fly to center field, driving in Martinez from third base.  Brian Magas followed with a single and moved to second when Taglienti reached first base after being hit by a pitch.  Two passed balls would bring Magas around for the score to put Old Westbury ahead 14-3.  Old Westbury added a final run in the seventh inning when Joe Wall doubled to left field and advanced to third base on a grounder by Felipe Martinez.  Wall came around to score when Kevin Reynolds connected on a single, lifting Old Westbury to a 15-3 final.

Old Westbury starting pitcher Dan Fordyce went 2 innings of work and allowed 3 hits and 3 earned runs while striking out 2 batters.  Peter Reyes, John Pensa and Robert Whitenack pitched the third, fourth and fifth innings respectively and recorded one strikeout apiece.  Christen Colon pitched a scoreless sixth inning and Nick Spiegler struck out 2 batters, pitching a perfect seventh inning.  George Pagan pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Bill Campbell shut the door with 2 strikeouts in the ninth inning. 

Old Westbury's offense was led by Greg Jones, who finished 2-for-2 at the plate (3 Runs, 4 SB, 2 Singles, RBI).  Jesse Germinario chipped in by going 2-for-4 (2 Doubles, 2 Runs, 2 RBI, SB) and John Taglienti went 1-for-3 (Double, 2 Runs, 2 RBI).  Old Westbury racked up 8 stolen bases and 16 hits on the game.
