OLD WESTBURY, N.Y.-The SUNY College at Old
Westbury Baseball team defeated non-conference opponent, Baruch
College, 14-1 on Tuesday evening at the Jackie Robinson Athletic
Complex. Old Westbury improves to 3-16 overall while the
Bearcats falls to 2-11 on the season.
Panthers at the plate: Kevin Reynolds led the Panthers with a
4-for-5 performance at plate. Reynolds plated a triple and
scored four runs to highlight his day while John Taglienti
(3-for-4, 2 SB‘s) drove in three Panthers and scored two
runs. Josh Flett hit 3-for-5 with three runs batted in, two
stolen bases and one score. Bill Campbell (2-for-2, SB)
doubled in one Panther and scored one run as Joe Mazzarese
(1-for-3) drove in two runs and swept one base. Thomas
Butler knocked in two Panthers and Ryan Blanco and Ben Farmer each
stole a pair of bases.
Bearcats at the plate: Greg Polius went 2-for-3 at the plate with a
pair of singles to lead the Bearcats. Ronnie Rojas connected
on a double for the lone extra base hit for the Bearcats and
finished 1-for-4 with one run batted in. John Reyes scored
the lone run for the Bearcats in the first inning, coming home from
third base on a wild pitch for the score.
Panthers on the mound: Jake Tauber tossed two innings of work and
struck out three Bearcats. Tauber allowed one run (0 earned)
on one hit and handed out three free passes. Jorge Hiraldo
(1-1) earned the victory after relieving Tauber for five scoreless
innings. Hiraldo allowed two hits and struck out three while
walking four batters. Frank Russo Jr. and Thomas Butler
closed out the eighth and ninth innings, with one and two
strikeouts, respectively.
Bearcats on the mound: Emmanuel Alcantara threw two innings and was
charged with five runs (3 earned) on four hits. David
Chestnut relieved Alcantara for three innings in which he
surrendered five runs (1 earned) on eight hits. Chestnut
struck out one Panther and walked two while Jeffery Tapia followed
with one inning of work, giving up two runs (1 earned) on two hits
in addition to three strikeouts and two walks. Greg Polius
hurled the final two innings on the mound and was hit for two runs
(1 earned) on two hits. Polius struck out three Panthers and
walked two.
Game notes: Old Westbury out-hit Baruch, 16-3, including a 4-1
advantage in the extra base hit department. On the base path,
the Green and Ivory swept 10 bases and stranded 11 Panthers while
Baruch had two stolen bases and stranded nine Bearcats on
base. In the field, Old Westbury committed one error and
Baruch had seven. On the mound, Old Westbury registered nine
strikeouts and Baruch posted seven.
Old Westbury returns to the diamond on Wednesday, April 2nd to host
Skyline Conference opponent, Yeshiva University. First pitch
of the double-header is slated for 4:00 p.m. For more
