COCOA, FL.-The SUNY College at Old Westbury Baseball team dropped two tough games at the Cocoa Expo Sports Center on Monday after against non-conference opponent, Bridgewater State College. In game one, Old Westbury fell 8-4 and then closed out their trip with a 19-8 defeat. Old Westbury is now 1-13 overall while Bridgewater State improves to 3-1 on the season.
Panthers at the plate (Game 1): David Collado led the Panthers with two hits as he went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs batted in and one stolen base. Emmanuel Mateo hit 1-for-3 with a double and scored one run in addition to one stolen base while Ben Farmer hit a three bagger and finished 1-for-3 at the plate with one run batted in. Joe Mazzarese (1-for-4) and Steve Henriquez each scored one run.
Bears at the plate (Game 1): David Kiloski recorded the lone Bear to record a multiple hits as he finished 2-for-4 with one run scored. Dana Hanson followed with a 1-for-3 performance at the plate which included two runs batted in while Steve Lambert scored twice and went 1-for-2. Steve Smith (1-for-2) doubled in a run and scored along with reaching base on two walks. Mark Claffey singled through the left side to drive in one run while scoring one run in addition to swiping one base.
Panthers on the mound (Game 1): Thomas Butler (0-3) threw four innings in which he allowed four earned runs on four hits. Butler stuck out five batters along with handing out five free passes. Dan Fordyce came in for two innings of relief work, where he allowed three earned runs on four hits at the same time as ringing up two batters on strikes.
Bears on the mound (Game 1): Spenser Hatstat went the distance while allowing just five hits and three earned runs over seven innings. Over his final five innings, Hatstat sent 16 of the final 19 batters he faced back to the dugout. Hatstat rang up six Panthers on strikes and walked two.
Game notes (Game 1): Old Westbury was edged in the hitting department, 8-5, despite totaling three extra base hits compared to two by Bridgewater State.
Panthers at the plate (Game 2): Emmanuel Mateo led the panther attack after he went 2-for-3 including two doubles, three runs batted in along with one run scored and one stolen base. Steve Henriquez hit 2-for-3 and scored two runs while Ben Farmer had two hits and finished 2-for-3 with one run scored. John Taglienti stroked a two run double to left and finished the game 1-for-2 with one run scored. Ivan Tineo (1-for-3), Bill Campbell (1-for-4), Kevin Reynolds (1-for-4) and Joe Mazzarese (0-4) each scored one run.
Bears at the plate (Game 2): Steve Lambert led the Bears with a perfect 4-for-4 day at the plate. Lambert had two doubles and scored three runs in addition to driving home two. Steve Smith (3-for-5) and Mark Claffey (1-for-3) followed with four runs scored apiece. Smith connected on a three run homerun along with a double and one stolen base while Claffey drove in two Bears and totaled two walks. David Kiloski went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in and scored one run.
Panthers on the mound (Game 2): Jake Tauber (0-2) was limited only two innings of work, where he surrendered 1- earned runs on six hits. Tauber walked six and struck out one. Frank Russo Jr. relieved Tauber and went two and one third innings of four hit baseball and gave up three earned runs and walked two. George Pagan pitched the final two and two third innings and was charged with five earned runs on five hits while striking out three.
Bears on the mound (Game 2): Jeff Sarahs was limited to three and two thirds of an inning as he was lit up for seven earned runs on nine hits while striking out one. Joe Caparotta (1-0) relieved Sarahs with one third of an inning of work and gave up one hit. Tim Bonham closed out the final three innings to earn the save after retiring nine of ten batters that he faced with only one hit and three strikeouts.
Game notes (Game 2): Old Westbury was out-hit, 15-11, including 6-3 in the extra base hit column. Both teams registered four strikeouts apiece and while Old Westbury walked 10 batters. Old Westbury was flawless in the field while Bridgewater committed three errors.
Old Westbury (1-13) returns to action on Thursday, March 20th to host non-conference opponent, Cortland State.
