PANTHER BASEBALL SPLITS WITH CENTENARY

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y.-The SUNY College at Old Westbury Baseball team split a double-header with Centenary College on Wednesday evening at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex. Old Westbury dropped game one, 10-9 and bounced back with a 7-3 victory in the series finale. Old Westbury improves to 11-23 overall while Centenary College stands at 12-14 on the season.
Panthers at the plate (Game 1): Old Westbury registered four Panthers with multiple hits in a tough game one loss to the Cyclones. Emmanuel Mateo (2-for-4, R) doubled in Ryan Blanco (2-for-4) and Joe Mazzarese ((1-for-3) to score the go ahead runs in the sixth inning before Bill Campbell (2-for-4, 2 RBI) platted Mateo home. Blanco singled (3rd inning) and doubled (6th inning) home two Panthers. Josh Flett (2-for-3, SB) hit a pair of sinlges and scored two runs while Ben Farmer (1-for-1) singled in David Collado (1-for-3, 2 R) and later scored in the seventh inning.
Cyclones at the plate (Game 1): Zach Reynolds (3-for-4) led the Cyclones with a trio of singles to drive in three runs and two scores. Mark DeMaio (1-for-3, SB), Mike Fasano (0-for-2) and William Geltzeiler (1-for-3, SB) each scored two runs while DeMaio drove in one. Michael McGuckin (1-for-2) and Mark Cerrachio (1-for-4) each drove home two Cyclones in which McGuckin scored one run.
Panthers on the mound (Game 1): Dan Fordyce pitched six and one third innings of work for the no-decision. Fordyce gave up three earned runs (7 runs) on five hits along with one strikeout and four walks. David Collado (0-6) was unable to prevent the Cyclones from scoring as he gave up three earned runs on two hits over two thirds of an inning.
Cyclones on the mound (Game 1): Matt Devenny recieved the no-decision after throwing three innings with five earned runs (6 runs) on five hits and two strikeouts. Chris Stacy then came in for three innings of relief work for the win and was charged with one earned run on two hits along with one walk. Chris Mattson earned the save after striking out two Panthers in the ninth inning and gave up two earned runs on four hits.
Game notes (Game 1): Old Westbury out-hit Centenary College, 11-7 including a 4-0 advantage in the extra base hit department. On the base path, Old Westbury stole one base and stranded three Panthers while Centenary College stole three bases and left four Cyclones on base. In the field, Old Westbury committed four errors as Centenary College had one. On the mound, Old Westbury struck out one Cyclone and walked four while Centenary College had four strikeouts and one walk.
Panthers at the plate (Game 2): David Collado (2-for-4, RBI) and Kevin Reynolds (2-for-4) were two of four Panthers to register multiple hits in a series splitting victory over Centenary. Reynolds singled in Collado from second base in both the first and second inning to collect two runs batted in. Emmanuel Mateo (2-for-4) and Josh Flett (2-for-3, 2B) each drove in one run while Flett scored on a single by Joe Mazzarese (1-for-4, R) after doubling in the second inning. Ryan Blanco (1-for-3), Bill Campbell (1-for-2, SB) and John Taglienti (0-for-2) each scored one run while Ben Farmer (1-for-2) and Campbell each drove in one run.
Cyclones at the plate (Game 2): Andrew Materia (1-for-2, SB) clubbed a triple and later scored after he drove in Jayson Loder (0-for-3) and Jarad Grant (0-for-2, 2 BB) to lead Centenary. Jose Cordova (1-for-3) doubled and Sal Prestigiacomo (1-for-3) singled to round out the trio of Cyclones who reached base via the hit. Lou Penna (0-for-3) and Andrew Granozio (0-for-3) were each sent back to the dugout on strikes two times.
Panthers on the mound (Game 2): Jake Tauber pitched a scoreless first inning before Frank Russo Jr. (1-0) tossed five innings of relief work to earn his first victory of the season. Russo Jr. allowed three earned runs on three hits while striking out five and handing out five free passes. Robert Whitenack closed the door on the Cyclones after he pitched a scoreless ninth inning with three strikeouts.
Cyclones on the mound (Game 2): Jason Wetzel pitched four innnings and suffered the loss. Wetzel gave up five runs (3 earned) on seven hits as he struck out one and walked two. Keith Moran came in for two innings of relief and allowed two earned runs on five hits while striking out three and walking one.
Game notes (Game 2): Old Westbury out-hit Centenary College, 12-3 despite being outslugged 3-1 in the extra base hit department. On the base path, Old Westbury swept two bases and stranded seven Panthers while Centenary College left seven Cyclones on base. On the defensive front, Old Westbury committed one error as Centenary College had four. On the mound, Old Westbury struck out eight and walked seven while Centenary College had four strikeouts and three walks.
Old Westbury returns to the diamond on Sunday, April 20th for a Skyline Conference showdown at Farmingdale State. First pitch of the double-header is slated for 12 noon.
