PANTHER BASEBALL FALLS TO CORTLAND STATE, 15-6

YAPHANK, N.Y.-The SUNY College at Old Westbury Baseball team lost a 15-6 decision to non-conference opponent, Cortland State on Thursday evening at Baseball Heaven in Yaphank, New York. The loss drops Old Westbury to 1-14 overall while Cortland State moves to 9-3 on the season.
Panthers at the plate: Emmanuel Mateo and David Collado led the Panthers with two runs batted in. Mateo connected on a solo-homerun to left center in the third inning and later doubled and swept a base as he finished 2-for-4 at the plate. Collado hit 1-for-4 and singled in two runs in the bottom of the eighth. Ryan Blanco posted the Panthers first run, via the solo homerun in the first inning and finished 2-or-4 with two runs scored. Kevin Reynolds went 2-for-4 at the plate with two singles and one score.
Red Dragons at the plate: Cortland was led by Joey Russo, who collected three hits and went 3-for-3 with two runs batted in and one score. John Zilnicki hit 2-for-3 with one double, one run batted in and two scores while Anderson Gardner went 2-for-3 with two scores. Adam Dimino (1-for-1), Nick Palmiero (1-for-2), Mike Zaccardo (2-for-4) and Nick DeVito (1-for-3) each connected on a long ball while Zaccardo scored three times.
Panthers on the mound: Robert Whitenack (0-3) tossed six innings in which he sat down six Red Dragons on strikes. Whitenack surrendered seven earned runs off 11 hits followed by a relief appearance by David Collado. Collado threw the final three innings, and struck out five Red Dragons. Collado was charged with six runs off of six hits with one walk.
Red Dragons on the mound: Ryan Hooper (2-0) pitched seven strong innings where he sat down 11 Panthers on strikes. Hooper was charged with two earned runs and allowed five hits. Brendan Rowlands gave up two hits and two runs over one third of an inning of work. Nick Serio closed out the final one and two third innings in which he allowed one earned run, two hits and one walk while ringing up two Panthers on strikes.
Game notes: Old Westbury was out-hit, 17-9, including 4-2 in the big fly column. The Panthers edged Cortland in the stolen base department, 2-1 despite committing three errors compared to two by Cortland. On the mound, Cortland struck out 13 Panthers and handed out one free pass while Old Westbury sent 11 Red Dragons back to the dugout on strikes and allowed one walk.
Old Westbury (1-14) returns to action on Thursday, March 27th to host non-conference opponent, William Paterson.
