JV BASEBALL COMEBACK FALLS SHORT AGAINST MASSASOIT C.C, 10-6

COCOA , FL.-The SUNY College at Old Westbury Junior Varsity Baseball team lost a 10-6 decision to Massasoit Community College on Sunday afternoon at the Cocoa Expo Sports Center in Cocoa Beach, Florida. Old Westbury falls to 1-2 overall while #7 Massasoit improves to 5-2 on the season.
Old Westbury allowed nine runs in the first inning as Justin Morales was hit for one earned run. Morales gave up five hits and handed out four free passes as the Panthers committed three errors in the opening inning. Massasoit added their final run in the second which included two hits off Matthew Gelormino. Old Westbury posted their first run in the fourth when John Taglienti walked and stole second. Bill Campbell was hit by a pitch followed by Andrew Hevia reaching on a fielder's choice that scored Taglienti from second. Old Westbury was held hitless heading into the seventh until the Panthers posted five runs on five hits. Chris St. George followed an Andrew Hevia walk with a double to right center that advanced Hevia to third. Matt Kelly grounded out to second to bring home Hevia from third and move St. George over to third. Leonel Lopez grounded to second to bring St. George across home plate for the score. Anthony Fernandez recorded an inside the park home run after lifting the ball into right field. Nick Tejada singled to left center followed by a John Pensa double down the left field line to bring home Tejada. John Taglienti singled up the middle to drive Pensa in from second for the score. Bill Campbell flied out to left field to end the comeback.
Anthony Fernandez led the Panthers offense after going 1-for-3 at the plate with an inside the park home run. John Pensa's RBI double highlighted a 1-for-4 day at the plate while John Tagliento went 1-for-3 with an RBI single and a stolen base. Chris St. George hit an RBI double in his lone appearance at the plate while Leonel Lopez and Andrew Hevia recorded two walks apiece. Justin Morales (0-1) was charged with the loss after bring held to one inning of work in which he allowed five hits, four walks and one earned run. Matthew Gelormino followed with two and one third of an inning in which he allowed two hits and one run while striking out two. Bill Campbell threw the final two and two third innings of three hit shutout baseball while striking out three.
Old Westbury was out-hit, 10-5 and recorded two stolen bases (Taglienti, Lopez). On the defensive end, Old Westbury committed four errors while Massasoit had one. Old Westbury struck out five while Massasoit sat down nine Panthers.
Old Westbury returns to action on Monday morning at the Cocoa Expo Sports Center in Cocoa Beach, Florida to take on the University of Connecticut-Avery Point.
