PANTHER BASEBALL SPLITS WITH MARITIME COLLEGE; PAGAN STRIKES OUT NINE

THROGGS NECK, N.Y.-The SUNY College at Old Westbury Baseball team split a Skyline Conference double-header at Maritime College on Sunday afternoon.  The Green and Ivory shutout Maritime College in game one, 13-0 but could not close out the sweep in game two, losing 5-4 in eight innings.  Old Westbury stands at 10-21 overall and 8-4 in league play while Maritime College moves to 5-14 on the season and 5-7 in Skyline Conference action.

Panthers at the plate (Game 1): Joe Mazzarese (4-for-5, SB) was one of six Panthers to register multiple hits in leading the Panthers to victory.  Mazzarese collected four singles and scored three runs along with driving in three Panthers.  David Collado (3-for-5) and John Taglienti (3-for-3) each stroked three singles, in which Collado scored two runs and platted home two runs and Taglienti scored two runs and drove in one.  Emmanuel Mateo (2-for-5, 2B) and Kevin Reynolds (2-for-4, R, SB) each drove in two runs and while Mateo scored two runs.  Ryan Blanco (2-for-5) hit two singles and Thomas Butler (0-for-4) scored two runs.

Privateers at the plate (Game 1): Matthew Cresswell (1-for-3) doubled to collect the lone hit for the Privateers in their game one shutout loss to the Panthers.  Brenton Yockel (0-5), Matthew Montanes (0-for-3) and Jacob Nessel (0-for-3) each struck out twice.

Panthers on the mound (Game 1): George Pagan (3-2) and Eddie Morales combined for the one hit shutout over Maritime College.  Pagan logged in seven innings of work off the mound in which he allowed one hit and two walks while sending nine Privateers back to the dugout on strikes.  Morales struck out one and walked three over two innings to seal the win. 

Privateers on the mound (Game 1): Dan Anderson surrendered 13 runs (9 earned) on 16 hits over five and two third innings to earn the loss.  Anderson handed out four free passes and struck out three before Anthony Tenga tossed the final three and one third innings in relief.  Tenga allowed one hit and struck out two Panthers.   

Game notes (Game 1): Old Westbury out-hit Maritime College, 17-1 including a 1-0 advantage in the extra base hit department.  On the base path, Old Westbury stole two bases and stranded nine Panthers while Maritime College stole one base and left 10 Privateers on base.  In the field, Old Westbury committed one error as Maritime College had two and turned one double-play.  On the mound, Old Westbury struck out 10 Privateers and walked five while Maritime College had five strikeouts and four walks.

Panthers at the plate (Game 2):  Kevin Reynolds (2-for-3, SB) and Joe Mazzarese (2-for-3, SB) were the lone Panthers to record multiple hits in a tough loss to Maritime College in the series finale.  Reynolds clubbed a two run home run to drive in Thomas Butler (0-for-3) in the fourth inning while Mazzarese hit a pair of singles and drove in Ben Farmer (0-for-2, SB) from second base in the fifth inning.  David Collado (1-for-4) slugged a double in the sixth inning and later stole second base in the eighth inning as Emmanuel Mateo (0-for-2) scored one run and stole one base.       

Privateers at the plate (Game 2): Matthew Montanes (2-for-5) and Kevin Mooney (2-for-3) hit a pair of singles and were the lone Privateers to have multiple hits in an extra inning win over the Panthers.  Montanes and Mooney drove in one run apiece as Montanes swept one base.  Brenton Yockel (1-for-4) scored two runs and drove in one while A.J. McPartlan (1-for-2, SB) doubled in the sixth inning and later scored when Mooney drove him in.  Matt Thomas (1-for-4) drove in one run and Joseph Carofano (1-for-3) scored one run.   

Panthers on the mound (Game 2): Dan Fordyce pitched the opening five and one third innings and gave up two earned runs on three hits.  Fordyce struck out four and walked four before Jorge Hiraldo came in for relief work and gave up two earned runs and two walks.  David Collado retired the final batters in the sixth inning and struck out one.  Thomas Butler (0-5) suffered the loss after pitching one and two third innings.  Butler let up the game winning run in the eighth inning with two outs when he walked in the winning run when he plunked the batter with a fastball.     

Privateers on the mound (Game 2): Matt Cresswell pitched a complete game to earn the victory after throwing eight innings.  Cresswell allowed four earned runs on five hits while striking out three and walking three.

Game notes (Game 2): Old Westbury was out-hit, 8-6 despite a 2-1 advantage in the extra base hit department.  On the base path, Old Westbury swept four bases and stranded three Panthers while Maritime College had four stolen bases and left 13 Privateers on base.  On the defensive front, Old Westbury turned one double-play and committed two errors.  On the mound, Old Westbury struck out eight and walked eight as Maritime College had three strikeouts and three walks.
