PANTHER JV BASEBALL TOPPED BY QUEENSBOROUGH C.C., 8-6

OLDWESTBURY, N.Y.-The SUNY College at Old Westbury JV Baseball team lost an 8-6 decision to Queensborough Community College on Wednesday evening at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex. Old Westbury drops to 1-5 overall while Queensborough Community College notched their first win of the season to improve to 1-13 on the season.
Panthers at the plate: Anthony Fernandez led the Panthers with three hits in going 3-for-4 on the day with three singles, three stolen bases, two runs scored and one run batted in. David Collado went 2-for-2 with one run scored and one run batted in while Ryan Blanco (1-for-1) doubled in two Panthers. Leonel Lopez (1-for-2), Christian Martinez (1-for-1, SB) and Jonathan Espinal (2 SB's) each scored one run. Bill Campbell clubbed a double to drive in one Panther and finished 1-for-2 at the plate.
Tigers at the plate: Joaquin Curiel (2-for-4) led the Tigers with two hits, two runs and two stolen bases along with one run batted in. Keith Morrice (1-for-4) scored two runs and doubled to bring around one Tiger while Elbert Garcia hit a pair of singles and scored one run and swept one base. Joseph Mercado hit 2-for-5 with one run scored and one run batted in.
Panthers on the mound: Joshua Burgos tossed five innings of work and fanned three Tigers. Burgos surrendered four runs (3 earned runs) on six hits while handing out two free passes. Robert Whitenack relieved Burgos with an inning of perfect baseball, including one strikeout. Eddie Morales (1 strikeout) and David Collado (2 strikeouts) followed with one inning of work apiece and were charged with one earned run on one hit. Jake Tauber was unable to tame the Tigers in the top of the ninth inning as he relinquished two runs (1 earned run) on two hits and was credited with the loss.
Tigers on the mound: Randy Ortiz threw seven innings and recorded a game-high nine strikeouts while giving up four runs (3 earned runs) on seven hits and walking one. Eric Reyes was victorious after hurling two innings of three hit baseball. Reyes gave up two earned runs and struck out one Panther.
Game notes: Old Westbury drew even with
Queensborough Community College in the hitting department with ten
hits apiece while the Panthers garnered a 2-1 advantage in the
extra base hit column. On the base path, Old Westbury swept
eight out of ten bases and left four Panthers abandoned on base
while Queensborough Community College had four stolen bases and
stranded ten Tigers. On the mound, Old Westbury struck out
seven Tigers and handed out four free passes while Queensborough
Community College sat down ten Panthers on strikes and walked
one. On the defensive front, Old Westbury committed eight
errors while the Tigers had three.
Old Westbury returns to action on April 3rd to host
Suffolk Community College-West. First pitch is slated for
