PANTHER BASEBALL NOTCHES FIRST WIN WITH 5-3 DECISION OVER STEVENS

HOBOKEN, N.J.-The SUNY College at Old Westbury Baseball team scored its first win in the 2008 campaign with a 5-3 victory on the road at Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday afternoon.  Old Westbury is now 1-8 overall while the Ducks fall to 2-7 on the season.

Old Westbury scored two runs in the sixth followed by one run in the seventh and another two runs in the ninth to guarantee the victory.  Old Westbury trailed 3-0 heading into the sixth until John Tagleinti and David Collado started the inning by reaching base.  Taglienti was hit by the pitch and stole second as Collado singled and stole second.  Kevin Reynolds then smacked a single up the middle allowing Tagleinti to score and advancing Collado to third.  Collado would then score on a failed pick-off attempt turned error.  Steven Henriquez started off the seventh by reaching on an error and advanced to second.  Josh Flett threw down a sacrifice bunt to advance Henriquez over to third and later scored when Ivan Tineo grounded out to the shortstop to tie the game at 3-3.  Kevin Reynolds and Thomas Butler began the ninth inning with back to back hits, a double and a single as Reynolds scored and Butler moved to second on the throw.  Henriquez then placed a sacrifice bunt to advanced Lopez onto third.  Matthew Gelormino delivered a timely RBI single up the middle with two outs to score Butler and give the Panthers a two run advantage.

Dan Fordyce threw three and one third inning of shutout relief to earn the victory with a five strikeout and three hit performance.  Robert Whitenack pitched two thirds of an inning to close out the game and collect his first save of the year.  Jake Tauber started on the mound for Old Westbury and went five innings, allowing one earned run on six hits.                

The Panthers were led by a 3-for-4 effort at the plate from Kevin Reynolds, while also scoring one and driving in two.  Thomas Butler went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI as Matthew Gelormino went 1-for-4 with a single RBI. 

Old Westbury was out-hit by Stevens, 9-8 despite tallying two doubles.  On the mound, Old Westbury handed out five free passes and Stevens edged the Panthers in the strikeout department, 8-7.  On the defensive front Old Westbury committed four errors while Stevens had three.
