SUNY Old Westbury Students Receive the Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Award

Albany, NY—Senior Christina Squillante (Levittown, NY/Division Avenue) and three freshmen Ian Johnson (Jamaica, NY/John Adams), Brenda Marmol (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow), and Shawn Holland (Massapequa, NY/St. Anthony’s) have earned the 2004-2005 Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Award. This special award honors those students that demonstrate both academic excellence and outstanding athletic achievement.

Senior Christina Squillante has been an intricate part of Panthers Athletics throughout the past four years. Although her outstanding career has been well documented, during this years basketball season Christina accomplished many things making her stand above her competition for this award. In early December she hit her career 1000th point, while totaling 330 points for the 2004-2005 season. Christina has been recognized on the Skyline Honor Roll twice this season for her play. At the end of the season she was named 2nd Team All Conference. Christina ranks in the top ten in conference statistics in the categories for scoring, rebounding, in field goal percentage, and offensive rebounding. Christina is serving her second year as president of the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) and is a member of the Deans List.

Ian Johnson has become a household name on the basketball court for the Panthers during his first season. Ian scored 201 points and led his team in assists (89). He received the Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week Award twice and was once an honorable mention recipient. Ian also placed in the top ten of the conference in assists for the season.

Brenda Marmol is the 2004-2005 women’s swim team’s MVP. She placed second in the Skyline Conference Championship and holds the top time in the conference for the 500 free stroke (6:12:63). Brenda placed 1st in the 500 free stroke in all of the dual meets.

Shawn Holland made the All Metro Region Team this past season. He was named Skyline Rookie of the Week twice. Shawn was named the men’s soccer team’s MVP for the 2004 season.

All of these students hold a 3.0 grade point average or higher and have demonstrated tremendous athletic ability on the field, the court, or in the pool. These students will travel with Athletic Director John Lonardo to Syracuse, NY for a special ceremony on April 25th in which they will receive their awards from the Chancellor of the State University of New York.
