Old Westbury, NY—The Panthers men’s and women’s basketball teams hosted the first round of the Skyline Conference Tournament. The Lady Panthers played the first game of the double header beating Maritime College 74-18. The men’s team then took the floor and gained an 82-67 victory over Centenary College.
At the outset of the women’s game Maritime stepped on the floor and immediately put up a basket to lead the Lady Panthers by 2 points. Old Westbury wasn’t about to let a win slip away and they retaliated and left the first half with quite a lead (51-9) over SUNY Maritime. Rachele Yambeye (Elmont, NY) led the Lady Panthers with a double/double tallying 17 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Chanel Benjermain (Bronx, NY) was instrumental in taking possession for the Panthers contributing 6 steals in her 23 minutes of play. Maritime was led by Marissa Webber-Bay who contributed 6 points and 5 rebounds. The Lady Panthers will travel to take on Farmingdale State (2) tomorrow at 6:00pm.
The men’s game started immediately following the women’s game. Centenary came out and played a tough first half only allowing the Panthers an 8 point lead. The Panthers entered the second half on fire and Centenary could not keep up and the game ended with the Panthers up 15 points. Senior Sal Clark (New York, NY) lit up the court putting 30 points on the board, retrieving 7 rebounds, and dishing out 5 assists. Bryan Sherlock led Centenary College with 22 points and 9 rebounds. The Panthers will take on USMMA at Kings Point tomorrow night at 8:00pm.
