The Old Westbury men's basketball team fell 59-54 at St. Joseph's this evening, falling to 11-10 overall and 5-6 in the Skyline Conference. St. Joseph's improves to 13-9 and 6-5 in the league.
Jorge Martinez' four free throws with eight seconds to play broke a tie ball game and sealed the four-point win for the Eagles.
Derek DeLoney's jumper with 14 seconds on the clock tied the game for the ninth and final time. Old Westbury fouled six seconds later and the Panthers' bench was charged with a technical foul on the same play, giving Martinez four-straight free throws that would clinch the win for the Hawks.
St. Joseph's rebounded from a six-point halftime deficit and pulled out to a 5-point lead with under eight minutes remaining on a three-pointer by David Acree. Ramel Phillips answered with a three for Old Westbury and followed with a jumper on the next possession to tie the game at 45.
The Panthers took a 53-52 lead when Michael Garrett connected on a three-pointer with 2:05 on the clock, but with 14 seconds remaining, the game was once again tied.
DeLoney and Dan Kane scored the final two baskets of the first half, giving Old Westbury a six-point edge, its largest of the game, at the break.
Phillips finished with a game-high 18 points to lead Old Westbury, while Garrett added 11. Chris Niblock led St. Joseph's with 17, shooting 7-of-9 from the field, and Acree and Martinez added 15 each.
