Bronx, NY – The Old Westbury men’s soccer team was edged out by Maritime, as the Privateers’ Can Karabay tallied the game-winner with under 10 minutes to play for the 2-1 win. The Panthers fall to 2-4 on the season and 0-2 in the Skyline, while Maritime improves to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
Maritime took an early lead, as Quentin Peabody scored on an unassisted goal just 1:31 into the match. Despite six shots on goal and 11 total shots by the Panthers in the first half, the Maritime defense was able to hold onto its slim lead until halftime.
After being awarded a penalty kick for a foul inside the box, Old Westbury’s Alex Renwart tied the game at one in the early minutes of the second half. The teams battled back and forth for the next 35 minutes, with neither able to capitalize on any attempts.
The Privateers eventually tallied the game-winner in the 81st minute, as Karabay sailed one past Brian Hicks in goal for Old Westbury. The Panthers were unable to match Maritime, and the Privateers held on for the win.
Hicks finished with nine saves for the Panthers, while Renwart and John Senatore led the offense with six shots each. Maritime’s Matt Kavanaugh finished with 16 saves in the net.
The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, as they host Hunter in the 2005 Night Soccer Game, to be played underneath the lights at Panther Park. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:00 pm.
