Despite 45 combined shots the Old Westbury Panthers and SUNY Maritime played to a 1-1 tie in the Skyline Conference and home opener for Old Westbury. The Panthers move to 1-4-1 overall.
Old Westbury opened the scoring in the 13th minute, off John Senatore's right foot. Two beautiful passes started by James Giacopelli, and one touched by Felipe Cavalcanti led Senatore to beat starting goalie Matt Kavanaugh one-on-one.
Maritime charged back and scored the game-tying goal in the 31st minute. Mayer Nelson earned a corner kick after rocketing a shot to the upper left corner forcing Panthers goalie Brian Hicks to make an impressive diving save. Nelson's corner kick led to teammate Memet Alkon's first goal of the season.
Old Westbury had a scoring chance at the very end of each of the four periods, forcing Kavanagh to make a sprawling save at the end of the first overtime to keep Maritime in the game. Hicks made two tremendous saves, one off a header in the 87 minute, the other in the 96th minute shutting down the Maritime offense.
Old Westbury returns to action next Saturday September 23rd as the travel to Purchase, NY to face off against Manhattanville College in a Skyline contest.
