Mar 29, 2006

Behind five hits and four RBI by Katora Russell, the Old Westbury Panthers swept this afternoon's doubleheader with St. Joseph's (Bklyn.), 6-3, 6-3. The Panthers improve to 4-4 overall.

Katora Russell went 3-for-3 with 3 RBI, including a first inning homerun and a game-winning triple in the third to lead the Panthers to a 6-3 win in game one.

St. Joseph's scored one run in the top of the first, as Reyes recorded an RBI single. Old Westbury answered in the bottom half, with Nihal Boz leading off for the Panthers. Boz singled to open action and two batters later, Russell's shot to right field put Old Westbury up 2-1 early.

Erica Nabinger homered to open the second for Old Westbury, putting the Panthers on top 3-1, before St. Joseph's bounced back to tie the game with two runs in the top of the third.

With two outs and one runner on in the third, Russell blasted a triple to right field, driving in the winning run for Old Westbury. The Panthers went on to add two runs in the fifth for the 6-3 final.

Lindsay Amato earned the win, striking out six. Healy took the loss for St. Joe's.

The Bears took an early lead in game two, tallying three unearned runs in the top of the first, but the Panthers capitalized on St. Joe's errors to tie it up in the bottom half of the inning.

Russell once again stepped up for the Panthers, this time driving in Boz with an RBI single, that would prove to be the game-winning RBI, in the second inning.

Russell finished game two 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI, while Nabinger went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Amato recorded the win, striking out two and allowing no earned runs.

Old Westbury will return to non-conference action on Friday at Stevens. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
