St. Joe’s Tops Old Westbury in Softball Doubleheader
Apr 17, 2006

The Old Westbury softball team dropped its Skyline Conference doubleheader, falling 2-0 in game one and 6-0 in game two. The Panthers fall to 7-11 overall and 3-7 in the league.

After three scoreless innings, the Golden Eagles scored the would-be game-winner in the bottom of the fourth inning. Quirk reached base with a one-out double and would come around to score on an RBI single by Luneberg on the next play.

St. Joseph's added an insurance run in the fifth as Martinez hit a solo homerun with two outs already on the board.

Martinez struck out 19 batters in the win, holding the Panthers hitless in the shutout.

The Golden Eagles put together two runs in the third, as Martinez' two-run single scored Postiglione from third and King from second. St. Joseph's added four runs and put the game out of reach in the fifth, recording five hits during the rally.

Katora Russell and Kelly Fegan picked up the Panthers only two hits of the day, picking up a double and a single, respectively, during the top of the second. Russell went on to steal third and was thrown at home on another stolen base attempt.

Amato took the loss in game two for Old Westbury.

The Panthers return to action on Monday with a single game at home against Nassau Community College. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
