The USMMA softball team topped Old Westbury in today's Skyline Conference doubleheader, 4-0 and 14-2. Kings Point improves to 10-2 in the league and 12-22 overall, while Old Westbury falls to 3-9 in the Skyline and 7-13 overall.
Karen Taylor gave a dominating performance on the mound for USMMA in game one, striking out 16 and allowing just two hits late in the game. Taylor opened the game striking out the side and the Mariners retired the next 17 batters before Lindsay Amato picked up a single for Old Westbury in the sixth.
The Mariners offense took care of the rest of the game for her, supplying nine hits and four runs. Kings Point tallied the winning run in the top of the third, as Jennifer Swanson's double drove in Andrea Carey, who had reached on an error with the second at-bat of the game. Melissa Langston followed with an RBI double of her own and Jeanne Ferrer supplied a single for the Mariners third run of the inning.
Carey singled with two runners on in the sixth, giving Kings Point an insurance run.
Lindsay Amato took the loss for Old Westbury, allowing nine hits and two earned runs. Amato and Katora Russell picked up one hit each for the Panthers. Langston and Brittany Thornhill each went 2-for-4 for Kings Point in game one.
Kings Point put up five hits in the first inning of game two, taking a 5-0 lead. Ferrer and Sercel each picked up an RBI single and the Mariners' base runners capitalized on the Panthers' three errors to finish with five runs.
The Mariners added four runs in the third off of three hits, including an RBI triple by Carey. Kings Point scored five runs in the top of the sixth for a total of 14.
Old Westbury rallied in the fourth for two runs. Russell and Shanelle Brown tallied back-to-back singles and, after both runners advanced on a passed ball, Kelly Fegan's single drove both runners in.
Marino struck out eight in six innings en route to the win for Kings Point. Lindsay Amato took the loss for Old Westbury. Carey finished game two 4-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI to lead Kings Point.
Old Westbury will return to action on Thursday with a non-conference doubleheader against Purchase.
