Panthers Turnaround Season Ends with Split against Mt. St. Vincent

The Old Westbury women's softball team concluded its season this afternoon, splitting its doubleheader with Mt. St. Vincent. The Panthers fell 6-2 in game one, but came back for a 3-2 win in game two. Old Westbury's season, the program's most successful in recent memory, ends with a 14-16 overall mark, and a 6-11 Skyline record.

Last season, Old Westbury one only two games on the season, and picked up just one Skyline victory.

In game one, the Dolphins took a 1-0 lead with their first at-bat, scoring on an error by the Panthers. Old Westbury bounced back to plate two run in the second, when Jen Ragone reached on an error and two runs scored.

Jessica Piccoli singled with two runners on in the third, driving in the would-be game-winner for Mt. St. Vincent. The Dolphins went on to score three more runs in the third, taking a 5-2 lead, and scored their final run off of one hit in the sixth.

Lindsey Amato struck out seven in the loss. Kelly Fegan led the Panthers with a two-for-four performance in game one. Jessica Riddle earned the win for Mt. St. Vincent.

In game two, Old Westbury took a 2-0 lead in the fourth, as Shanelle Brown and Fegan each scored a run. Brown kicked off the Panther rally, opening the inning with a single, and came around to score on a double off the centerfield fence by Sheyra Veras. Fegan scored when Traci Weeks' reached base on an error.

Gina Angiolillo singled to open the sixth for the Dolphins, and, with the next at-bat, Piccoli's double to left field drove her in, cutting the Panthers' lead to one.

Old Westbury answered, scoring the game-winner in the bottom half of the same inning. With one out, Katora Russell started things off with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Veras stepped to the plate and scored Russell with a single up the middle.

Jackie Rizzotto's sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh scored Amanda Prendergast and Maguire, the would-be tying run reached base on an error with two outs, but the Panthers escaped the threat, as Angiolillo popped up to end the game.

Amato allowed five hits and struck out six en route to the win. She finishes the season 11-9. Krista Roberts allowed five hits in the loss for Mt. St. Vincent.
