The SUNY College at Old Westbury Athletic Department, as well as the campus and local communities will celebrate the grand opening of the Jackie Robinson Sports Complex on Tuesday, April 25, 2006. The day's festivities will include softball and baseball games, as well as a barbeque and an official opening by College President Calvin O. Butts, III.
"The grand opening of the baseball/softball complex signifies the continued commitment that Dr. Butts and the administration have made toward athletics, intramurals and recreation," Director of Athletics John Lonardo said. "It has been the goal of the athletic administration to provide the Old Westbury students with state-of-the-art training facilities and the baseball/softball complex is just part of the work in progress."
The new facility consists of the softball field (600 capacity) and the baseball field (1,500 capacity) and each features new bleachers, batting cages, dugouts, outfield fences and press boxes for home, visiting and local media coverage. In addition, the baseball field includes outdoor lighting, making it one of the premier baseball fields on Long Island.
