PANTHER SOFTBALL DROPS TWO ON SENIOR DAY TO POLYTECHNIC; CANINO SETS OLD WESTBURY RBI RECORD

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y.-The SUNY College at Old Westbury Softball team lost two games to Polytechnic University on Saturday afternoon at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.  Old Westbury lost a close 7-4 decision in game one and were unable to keep pace in game two, losing 15-4 to complete the series sweep.

Panthers at the plate (Game 1): Maria Canino (2-for-3) led a trio of Panthers with multi hits against Polytechnic University.  Canino doubled and tripled her way onto base while driving in three Panthers to go along with one score.  Huriye Donuk (2-for-3) and Nicole Rescigno (2-for-4) each hit for a pair of singles.  Ashley Esposito (1-for-2, 2 BB), Angela Adamkiewicz (0-for-3) and Jessica Stoddard (0-for-1, 2 BB) each scored one run while Crystal Rodriguez (0-for-3) drove in one run. 

Blue Jays at the plate (Game 1): Dominique Tota (3-for-4) was one of six Blue Jays to register multiple hits in a game one victory.  Tota had two doubled to drive in one run along with one score while Marie Brunelli (2-for-4) followed with a pair of singles that drove in two Blue Jays, in addition to two scores.  Laura Buzzard (2-for-4), Ryan Graybill (2-for-4) each had two singles as Buzzard drove in one and Graybill had two scores.  Tara Bucci (2-for-3) doubled and later scored as Shannon Halstead (2-for-3) drove in two runs and had one score.  

Panthers on the mound (Game 1): Deborah Ciccarelli suffered the loss after going the distance in a heartbreaker.  Ciccarelli gave up six earned runs (7 runs) on 13 hits while striking out six and walking three.

Blue Jays on the mound (Game 1): Maria Carnicella was victorious after pitching a complete game.  Carnicella gave up three earned runs (4 runs) on eight hits as she struck out five Panthers and handed out seven free passes.

Game notes (Game 1): Old Westbury was out-hit, 13-8 including 3-2 in the extra base hit department.  On the base path, Old Westbury stranded eight Panthers as Polytechnic University had two stolen bases and left nine Blue Jays on base.  In the field, Old Westbury committed two errors and Polytechnic University had three.  On the mound, Old Westbury struck out six and walked three while Polytechnic University had five strike outs and seven walks.  Maria Canino's three RBI performance gave her 43 on the season and moved her into sole possession of the Old Westbury Softball Single Season Record, moving past Katora Russell (40 RBI-2007)

Panthers at the plate (Game 2): Maria Canino (2-for-3, 2 R) was one of four Panthers to record multiple hits.  Canino clubbed a two run homerun to left center in the third inning to drive in Nicole Rescigno (2-for-2) after reaching on a triple.  Angela Adamkiewicz (2-for-3) doubled and later scored in the fifth inning off a singled by Jessica Stoddard (2-for-3).  Huriye Donuk (1-for-2) drove in Maria Canino in the fifth inning.     

Blue Jays at the plate (Game 2): Marie Brunelli (2-for-4) was one of three Blue Jays to have multiple hits.  Brunelli doubled and tripled in two runs to go along with three scores as Stephanie Niziolek (2-for-3) scored two runs and drove in one.  Laura Buzzard (2-for-4, R), Jennifer Lee (1-for-3, 2 R's) and Tara Bucci (0-for-1, R) each drove in two runs while Jacqueline Calandriello (1-for-4) drove in four Blue Jays and came around for two scores.  Ryan Graybill (0-for-1) reached base on three walks and scored two runs.

Panthers on the mound (Game 2): Deborah Ciccarelli tossed three innings in the circle in which she allowed 11 earned runs (15 runs) on six hits.  Ciccarelli struck out two and gave out 10 walks before Angela Adamkiewicz came in for relief work.  Adamkiewicz pitched two scoreless innings and gave up two hits.

Blue Jays on the mound (Game 2): Maria Carnicella pitched the opening inning and gave up two hits before Stephanie Niziolek threw two innings.  Niziolek was charged with two earned runs on four hits as she struck out one and walked one.  Ryan Graybill closed out the final two innings and allowed one earned run (2 runs) on five hits with two strikeouts.

Game notes (Game 2): Old Westbury out-hit Polytechnic University, 11-8 including a 4-2 advantage in the extra base hit department.  On the base path, Old Westbury stranded seven Panthers and stole two bases as Polytechnic University left eight Blue Jays on base.  In the field, Old Westbury committed five errors and Polytechnic University had two.  On the mound, Old Westbury struck out two Blue Jays and walked 10 while Polytechnic University struck out three Panthers and walked one.
