Danna Purnell sank three free throws in the final seconds of the second overtime and Kings Point's last second attempt bounced out, sealing a 78-76 win for the Old Westbury Panthers over Kings Point. Old Westbury improves to 8-5 overall and 2-2 in the league, while the Mariners fall to 6-4 and 1-1 in the Skyline Conference.
Purnell's free throw earlier in the period gave the Panthers a 75-72 lead with 2:39 remaining. May Marie Hayes hit a free throw for Kings Point, pulling the Mariners within two a minute later, but, after a series of missed attempts, Purnell sank two free throws with 13 seconds remaining, giving Old Westbury a four-point lead. Kristen Hetsko scored on a lay-up for Kings Point six seconds later, but Purnell sank one more free throw on the ensuing play, giving Old Westbury a 78-75 lead with five seconds on the clock.
Kings Point was fouled on a rebound attempt, and after Hetsko sank the first and intentionally missed the second free throw with one second remaining, Stephanie Waller's last-second offensive rebound and jumper bounced in and out, giving Old Westbury the win.
In the first overtime period, the Mariners led by as many as three, but owned a two-point lead with just 19 seconds on the clock, as Waller sank one-of-two free throws. After Old Westbury's Jessica Lippolis pulled down the rebound, Janera Johnson forced the second overtime session by grabbing her own offensive rebound and sinking a lay-up as time expired.
In the second half, Kings Point used an 11-0 run to take a one-point lead on a made three-pointer with 7:13 to play. The two teams battled back and forth over the next seven minutes, forcing five ties and four lead changes. Johnson's free throw with 35 seconds left in regulation, tied the game at 61 and forced overtime.
Old Westbury used an 11-0 run in the first half, sparked by Monique Midy's jumper, to build themselves an eight-point halftime lead.
Purnell finished with a double-double for the Panthers, recording season-highs of 25 points and 19 assists, while also adding eight rebounds. Johnson also had a double-double, finishing with 17 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Midy rounded out the Panthers in double figures, finishing with 15 points. Morgan Gartner led Kings Point with 22 points, Hayes finished with 18.
Old Westbury returns to action on Saturday, January 14 at 2:00 pm with a Skyline contest versus Mt. St. Vincent.
