Old Westbury Women Edge Brooklyn in Season Opener, 69-67

Ramapo, NJ A total of four Panthers tallied double figures as Old Westbury edged out Brooklyn College 69-67 in the season opener on Saturday. The Panthers (1-0) will face the host Ramapo Roadrunners in the second day of action at the Ramapo Tip-off Classic on Sunday at 3:00 pm.

After leading the Panthers with 10 first half points, Danna Purnell kept up her pace, adding nine in the second frame to lead Old Westbury to the slim win. Trailing by one point at the half, Old Westbury rallied back, capitalizing on a Brooklyn total of 32 turnovers in the match.

Rachel Yambaye tallied a double-double for Old Westbury, tallying 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Janera Johnson also added 11 points and freshman Leah Hernandez rounded out the Panthers in double figures, chipping in 10 points in her collegiate debut.

The Panthers shot 43% from the field (11-of-29) for the game, Jenny Varughese led Brooklyn with a game-high 20 points.

Ramapo used a game-opening 20-0 run, and would never relinquish a double-digit lead. The Roadrunners went on to beat St. Elizabeth 96-28. Old Westbury and Ramapo will tip-off on Sunday at 3:00 pm.
